T: Oh, Lord Śrī Varadarāja, you who rides on the divine eagle Garuḍa! Considering that Earth, described as the treasure womb of gems, was born from Your lotus-like feet, she is sometimes described as a lotus in Purāṇic scriptures. This is an instance when we can see the result of a cause manifesting properties not contradicting the attributes of its cause.
Explanation: We see in a cause-effect phenomenon the attributes of the cause manifest in the result. Earth as the effect has been borne of the Lord's feet, its cause.
Padbhyāṃ Bhūmirdiśaḥ Śrotrāt is the Purāṇic assertion.
Since the Lord's foot, which is the cause, is like the lotus, the Purāṇas affirm that Earth as the result or its effect is also like the lotus. In Vāmana Purāṇa, it is said:
Thus, Earth is described as having the shape of a lotus.
The ratification of a particlar instance or phenomenon by employing the logic of a common experience or understanding is a case of Arthāntaranyāsa figure of speech.
