Srimad Bhagavatam XII. snippet 6 - 31 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 6- Thursday, 31 August 2023 - Devarshi Narada, incomparable hero.
***
This snippet threatens to get very long as the subject is my hero, Devarshi Narada. Son of Brahma, knower of Brahman, Trikaalajnani (knows the past, present and future), Trilokasanchari (one who travels freely through the three worlds), one who is received with great respect by every god and man, worshipped by Shiva and Sri Krishna, who stirs the plot according to Bhagavan's will, is the spiritual instructor of almost all the great people we know including Vyasa and Valmiki! He also is a supreme musician who sings and plays his unique Veena Mahati.

Sage Narada comes in Srimad Bhagavatam many, many times, in all Skandhas. He is the epitome of Bhakti and also an astute ambassador of Bhagavan. Where to begin and where to end then? I have randomly chosen a few portions!

Sage Narada tells Maharshi Vyasa his own story  to illustrate the effect of Bhakti on man. He was only five when one night, his mother, who was a Dasi serving in Rishi ashramas, went out to milk the cow. She was bitten to death by a snake, acting under the force of Destiny. Narada, the small boy that he was, had imbibed great learnings from the Rishis he had served. He considered this passing of his mother (he had no one else) an act of the Divine, and began to do severe Tapas in the forest. Bhagavan, pleased with his devotion, appeared momentarily in his heart and blessed him, telling him through an oracle that he was destined for great things.

https://rsachi.blogspot.com/2022/08/srimad-bhagavatam-30-august-2022.html

“The oracle ended. I felt blessed and lost my anxiety. I carried on, engaged solely in intense spiritual disciplines, until one day, like a stroke of lightning at the height of monsoon, my body dropped dead. I was relieved of this body made of the five elements. I merged in the breath of Brahma at the end of that epoch, just as Sriman Narayana slipped into his Yoga Nidra in the ocean.”
“After a long time, the new epoch was created by Brahma, and I was created as Narada, along with rishis like Marichi and Atri.”
“By Maha Vishnu’s grace…”
“I started travelling freely in the three worlds, spreading devotion.”
“I have been given this Veena by the Lord, and it is adorned with “SwaraBrahman= Transcendental Musical Vibrations”. Playing on this Veena, singing the infinite glories of the Lord, I travel the three worlds constantly.”
“Anytime I wish to have the vision of the Lord in my heart, I can do so, all by His grace.

Sage Narada instructs King Yudhisthira about the deep secrets of a Dharmic life. He begins by listing a great set of 30 qualities that everyone should practise for betterment in this world and in the world hereafter.
  1. Truthfulness
  2. Compassion
  3. Austerity
  4. Cleanliness
  5. Fortitude (in suffering)
  6. Discrimination between right and wrong.
  7. Self-control ( body and senses)
  8. Non-violence
  9. Celibacy/continence
  10. Non-possessiveness
  11. Self-study
  12. Simplicity
  13. Cheerfulness
  14. Equanimity
  15. Service of noble souls
  16. Poise and measured conduct
  17. Gradual detachment from physical pleasures
  18. The realisation that egoistic endeavours produce adverse results
  19. Reticence
  20. Self-contemplation
  21. Generosity in feeding and caring for animals and creatures around
  22. Seeing own self and God in others- humans and animals.
  23. Seeking the company of holy men.
  24. Chanting the names of Bhagavan Sri Krishna.
  25. Singing Bhagavan's glories
  26. Constant remembrance of the Lord
  27. Serving the Lord in all acts
  28. CeremonialWorship
  29. Considering the Lord as one's friend and beloved
  30. Surrender to the Lord
After listing these, Sage Narada sets the benchmark for who is indeed a Brahmin. He begins by saying that being a Brahmin is not due to some accidental birth but results from several lives of acquiring good tendencies and godliness reflecting Brahma himself. So how does a Brahmin conduct himself?

T: Self-control of mind and body, cleanliness, cheerfulness, forbearance and forgiveness, transparency, knowledge and wisdom, compassion, considering oneself the servant of the Lord - these symbolise a true Brahmin. Narada emphasises that a Brahmin does not engage in business and menial activities ever.

The story of Puranjana that Sage Narada tells Prachinabarhi to explain the traps and troubles of this Maya-filled existence is a compelling reading. Just some snippets:
"Puranjana is the living entity or Jiva, that transmigrates from body to body, from insect to a human being, as the Karmas dictate. He thus experiences the results of the past Karmas. His friend is Ishwara, the Supreme Being, always available as a friend, but almost never understood or recognised for what He is."

There are two parts of the Panchala kingdom that the ineffectual Puranjana rules. The lower or southern one of pleasures (food, sex and so on). The higher or northern one of acquiring knowledge. The rectum and genital are the lower gates taking one southward. The senses/gates in the upper region help in gathering knowledge.

The two blind associates of Puranjana represent the hands and feet, with no wisdom of their own but acting as directed by the mind.

Those invaders, Bhaya, Prajvaara and Jaraa are all messengers of Death or Yama.

Jiva acting in Sattva reaps the reward of progress to higher worlds, heavens. Acting under Rajas, the Jiva comes back repeatedly to the same level of life of sorrow and so-called happiness. Acting under Tamas drives the Jiva to lower, subhuman forms and births.

Simply put, no change in the type or nature of activity can help except devotion to the Lord. Imagine one is dreaming. Even if he wakes up from a dream, the effect of the dream will linger unless he lifts his consciousness to a higher level. Sometimes, we suffer because we see a tiger in a dream; or sometimes, we mistakenly sight a snake. But actually, there is neither a tiger nor a snake. That is how the mindmap of man is full of subtle projections and delusions making him suffer the consequences. These sufferings cannot be mitigated unless we are awakened from our dream called this mistaken understanding of reality.

Sage Narada comes to witness firsthand the Leela of Bhagavan Sri Krishna play-acting his many roles in this world of Yoga Maya. He enters the city of Dwaraka and visits Bhagavan's many queens' palaces and observes how Bhagavan is performing the role of an ideal householder in each home!

Narada enters one of the sixteen thousand palaces and sees Devi Rukmini personally serving her Lord, Sri Krishna, despite employing countless maids. As soon as Sri Krishna notices Narada, he gets up from his bed, offers obeisances to the sage and seats him on his own seat. Then the Lord bathes Narada’s feet and sprinkles the water on his own head. Such is the exemplary behaviour of  Sri Krishna! Such is the exemplary devotee, Devarshi Narada!

Srimad Bhagavatam XII - snippet 5 - 30 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 5- Wednesday, 30 August 2023 - Where to find Sri Hari!?
***
Where do you find Bhagavan? Where Srimad Bhagavatam is being recited with Bhakti!
There is this famous shloka in Padma Puranam. Bhagavan is asked by Narada which is the likeliest place for a devotee to go and find Bhagavan. Bhagavan replies:
“Dear Narada, here’s my secret. I cannot be found by going to Vaikuntha! Nor do I dwell within the hearts of great meditators. But wherever my Bhaktas are singing the Srimad Bhagavatam, i.e. my glories, I shall surely be there to be found by the seeker!”
This is illustrated in the Srimad Bhagavata Mahatmyam itself.
https://rsachi.blogspot.com/2022/08/aug-24.html
When Narada wants to resuscitate Bhakti, with her two sons, Jnana and Vairagya, he desperately searches for a solution and finds the Sanat Kumaras. They smilingly remind him that indeed, he has known all along that the Srimad Bhagavatam recitation is the surest way to revive Bhakti, Jnana and Vairagya. They go on to explain to him that he should do the recitation in a systematic way.
"Oh Sage Narada,  we shall now lay out for you the detailed procedure for Saptaha recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam!"
The Kumaras give a step-by-step manual for the recitation festival. No detail is left out and you can be sure that the event is as elaborate and grand and methodical as a gala Hindu wedding with all rituals and paraphernalia. Unlike the social need to show off and enjoy the pleasures during a wedding, here the need is to celebrate perhaps the "grandest" festival of recitation-based devotional worship.
They begin by saying that money is gathered, a suitable, large, auspicious place is cleaned up and readied, the materials are assembled, the invitations are sent out, and then regulatory austerities observing frugal diet, cleanliness, meditation, prayer to forefathers, and several preparations needed for the big event are all performed with the utmost sincerity. The invitations should be sent far and wide, especially to devotees and scholars. If done well, it will gather the best of the best audiences.
Who are all eligible to attend the Srimad Bhagavatam recitation? Young and old, healthy and sick, men, women, children, rich and poor, everyone, bar none. These are mentioned in much detail. Yet, is no one excluded? No, wait. The Bhagavatam recitation is not for the over-smart, confused and rabidly argumentative naysayer non-devotees.
One may read the several details here, as they show how methodical our ancestors were in prescribing the Do's and Don'ts for such an important programme as the recitation of Hinduism's most evocative devotional scripture viz. the Srimad Bhagavatam.
***
Now when the Kumaras concluded their detailed instruction to Sage Narada, he felt most gratified.
"I am blessed by you, Oh, Kumaras, having been taught this process! Indeed how wonderful that Bhagavan Maha Vishnu Krishna who is in Vaikuntha (i.e. the highest heaven in creation) can be attained through merely listening to this Bhagavatam recitation!"
Just as Narada has heard all this from the Kumaras, and recalled the glory of the greatest scripture, Srimad Bhagavatam, we can sense that the moment is ripe. Therefore, just then, Sage Shuka, the original narrator of the Srimad Bhagavatam, himself arrives! He wants to conduct the proceedings himself. He is merely sixteen years old, but he is the acknowledged Teacher of Bhagavatam.
"Oh, devotees, you're blessed! Keep on drinking this nectar called Bhagavatam as long and as often as you can!"
***
Just as Shuka was explaining how the unique opportunity to enjoy the Bhagavatam was given only to devotees on this earth, and not in any heaven,  Bhagavan Sri Hari Maha Vishnu himself arrived to be present and to enjoy the company of His devotees! Along also came his greatest devotees- Prahlada, Dhruva, Bali, Arjuna, and others. Lord Shiva with Parvati, Lord Brahma also came! Then a grand singing of Hari Kirtan started in full swing.

Visualize this..."Prahlada was playing cymbals in a tender rhythm, Dhruva was playing a bronze bell, Narada himself played the veena, Arjuna sang in wonderful ragas, Indra played the mridangam, and the Kumaras danced singing "Jaya! Jaya!" as Shuka Maharishi, the narrator, soaked up the ultimate bliss of this moment!"
There in the middle danced in full vigour the blissful Bhakti with her sons Jnana and Vairagya. This out-of-this-world song and dance pleased Sri Hari immensely. He spoke:
"I am so pleased by your celebration thus! Ask for any boon!" The devotees answered in one voice, "Oh, Lord, we have only one request! Wherever Bhagavatam is sung and celebrated thus, kindly deign to come and grace us!" Sri Hari was most pleased to say, तथास्तु T: Be it so! and then He disappeared.
"There is nothing as pure and sacred as the Shuka-narrated Srimad Bhagavatam. Oh man, come and drink of this, it confers the ultimate bliss and it is narrated across twelve glorious sections!"

Srimad Bhagavatam XII. snippet 4 - 29 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 4- Tuesday, 29 August 2023 - Happy Onam! The great story of Maha Bali, devotee of Bhagavan.
***
Today, people in Kerala celebrate the annual visit of their king, Maha Bali or Maveli from Sutala to earth, to oversee the prosperity of his people.

Many Left Liberals cavil at the story of Vamana/Trivikrama "unfairly" taking away Bali's kingdom and stamping him to hell. This is sheer nonsense for anyone who has studied the Srimad Bhagavatam, the original source of the story. No wonder we consider that Vamana indeed graced Bali. Remember the famous line Baliyamanege Vamana bandante in the famous devotional Sri Krishna song, Baro Krishnayya!

So, today I want to revisit the blogposts that covered the story of Bali, in brief.

***

T: King Parikshit was quite perplexed to hear that Bhagavan had dethroned a valiant and good devotee, Bali. He inquired from Sage Shuka:  “Bhagavan is the proprietor of everything. Why did he beg three paces of land from King Bali like a poor man, and when he got the gift for which he had begged, why did he nonetheless arrest and dethrone King Bali who had just completed a great Yajna, whose overlord is Bhagavan himself!?” A question that is fair enough, you would say, right!?

Sage Shuka began to narrate the sequence of events, without directly answering Parikshit.

The churning of the ocean resulted in Amrita being partaken of by the Devas and hence they became invincible. After Bali and his Asura warriors were comprehensively defeated, as narrated before, the descendant of the great Sage Bhrigu, Sage Shukracharya, brought Bali back to life using his special Yogic and Mantra powers and restored his full glory. He and other Bhargavas blessed Bali to become super-powerful.

Shukra now supervised a tremendous Yajna called Vishwajit (World Conquest). From the sacred fire arose a fantastic golden chariot with the flag sporting a lion, equipped as well with great weapons. King Prahlada gave his grandson an eternally fresh garland of lotuses.

The glorious-looking Bali wore that splendid garland, put on his impenetrable armour, picked up his magnificent bow and inexhaustible quiver, and ascended that chariot. With his gold bracelets and sapphire earrings, Bali looked like the Yajna fire!

When King Bali performed these sacrifices, he gained a great reputation in all directions, throughout the three worlds. Thus he shone in his position, like the brilliant moon in the sky. His mood was one of great felicity, power, and enjoyment.

Soon, Bali and the Asuras had conquered the Devas, banished Indra from Amaravati, and the Devas were consigned to exile in misery.

***

Aditi complains to Sage Kashyapa that one line of his children have usurped the glory of her sons headed by Indra: "But you know how we Devas have now been deprived of our status and home by our rivals, Asuras. We need your protection! Look at how the formidable Asuras have taken away our opulence, our beauty, our fame and even our residence. Indeed, we have now been exiled, and we are drowning in an ocean of trouble. Oh best of sages, best of all those who grant auspicious benedictions, please consider our situation and bestow upon my sons the benedictions by which they can regain what they have lost.”

Sage Kashyapa teaches her a great Vrata called Payovrata to propitiate Maha Vishnu who shall address her problems and solve them. Aditi does so with great faith.

Bhagavan came and blessed Aditi:"You have prayed to me and properly worshipped me by performing the great Payovrata ceremony for the sake of protecting your sons. Because of Sage Kashyapa's austerities, I shall agree to become your son and thus protect your other sons.”

***

Bhagavan, who is never subject to death like an ordinary living being, appeared from the womb of Aditi.  The Lord appeared in his original form, with ornaments and weapons in his hands. Although this ever-existing form is not visible in the material world, he nonetheless appeared in this form. Then, in the presence of his father and mother, he assumed the form of Vamana, a midget Brahmin, a Brahmachari, just like a theatrical actor, all set to play his Leela!

***

When the Lord heard that King Bali was performing Ashwamedha Yajna under the guidance of exalted descendants of Sage Bhrigu, the self-complete Supreme Lord proceeded there to show his grace to Bali. The earth shook under his weight at every step although he was but a diminutive Brahmin on foot!

While the priests of the Bhrigu dynasty and their disciples debated who it could be, the Bhagavan Vamana, holding in his hands the staff, the umbrella and a waterpot full of water as suited a Brahmin, entered the arena of the Ashwamedha Yajna.

Bali, jubilant at seeing Lord Vamana, whose beautiful limbs contributed equally to the beauty of his entire body, offered him a seat with great delight. Thus offering a proper reception to Bhagavan, perceived in his divine beauty by the liberated souls, Bali worshipped Him by washing His lotus feet.

Bali wanted to offer the best of gifts to this Brahmin. This is in the fitness of things, since Bali had ascended the pinnacle of lordship over the worlds, and had a reputation for his generosity. He was also conducting a Yajna where giving away gifts is de rigueur.

"Oh, son of a Brahmin, today the fire of Yajna is ablaze according to the injunction of the Shastra, and I have been freed from all the sinful reactions of my life by the water that has washed your lotus feet. Oh, my Lord, by the touch of your small lotus feet, the entire surface of the world has been sanctified."

"Oh, son of a Sage, it appears that you have come here to ask me for something. Therefore, whatever you want you may take from me. Oh, best of those who are worshippable! You may take from me a cow, gold, a furnished house, palatable food and drink, the daughter of a Brahmin for your wife, prosperous villages, horses, elephants, chariots or whatever you desire.”
***

A wonderful dialogue precedes Bali’s final act of committing 3 paces of land to Lord Vamana.

"I am able to give you an entire island because I am the proprietor of the three divisions of the universe. You have come to take something from me and have pleased me with your sweet words, but you are asking only three paces of land. Therefore You are not very intelligent. Oh, small boy, one who approaches me to beg something should not have to ask anything more, anywhere (i.e. have any wish remaining unfulfilled). Therefore, if you wish, You may ask from me as much land as will suffice to maintain you according to your needs."

Bhagavan said: "Oh, my dear King, even the entirety of whatever there may be within the three worlds to satisfy one’s senses cannot satisfy a person whose senses are uncontrolled. So it is not the magnitude of gifts but the dispassion within one's heart that leads to contentment."

"A Brahmin who is satisfied with whatever is providentially obtained is increasingly enlightened with spiritual power, but the spiritual potency of a dissatisfied Brahmin decreases, as fire diminishes in potency when water is sprinkled upon it. Therefore, Oh King, from you, the best of those who give charity, I ask only three paces of land. By such a gift I shall be very pleased, for the way of happiness is to be fully satisfied to receive that which is absolutely needed."

Sage Shukracharya, a great Bhargava, the Guru of Asuras, was no ordinary Brahmin. He was enlightened but also very serious about protecting the Asuras' interest. He could see Vamana was none other than Maha Vishnu, come to ruin Bali! So he spoke peremptorily:
"Oh Bali, son of Virocana, this Brahmachari in the form of a dwarf is directly the imperishable Bhagavan Vishnu! Accepting Kashyapa Muni as his father and Aditi as his mother, he has now appeared in order to fulfil the interests of the Devas, your enemies. You do not know what a dangerous position you have accepted by promising to give him land. I do not think that this promise is good for you. It will bring great harm to Asuras! Vamana will first occupy the three worlds with one step, then he will take his second step and occupy everything in outer space, and then he will expand his universal body to occupy everything. Where will you offer him the third step?!?"

"You will certainly be unable to fulfil your promise, and I think that because of this inability your eternal residence will be in hell."  Shukracharya is like a lawyer advising a client who is shortly going to get an adverse verdict unless he retracts his statements. The course of life is such that a hero like Bali will never retract what he has said, even if he knows it was foolhardy to give such a promise. he had momentarily allowed his ego and sense of lordship overcome his good sense, unable to see that God visits us in the most unpredictable ways to test us.

***

After hearing the cautionary advice of Shukracharya, Bali became contemplative. Because it is the duty of a householder to maintain Dharma, Artha and Kama, without compromising one for the other, Bali thought it improper to withdraw his promise to the Brahmachari.

Bali said:
“Sir, I am the grandson of King Prahlada, an exemplar of Dharma. How can I withdraw my promise because of greed for money when I have already said that I shall give this land? How can I behave like an ordinary cheater, especially toward a Brahmin? There is nothing more sinful than untruthfulness. Because of this, mother earth once said, “I can bear any heavy thing except a person who is a liar.”
If this Brahmin really is Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped by the Vedas, he would never risk his widespread reputation; either he would lie down having been killed by me, or he would kill me in a fight.” (Can you see ego at work again?)

This disobedience of King Bali towards Sage Shukracharya incurred his great anger. He cursed Bali,
You stubborn fool, for disobeying me, you shall soon lose all your kingdom and all your wealth.”

Unmoved, Bali went ahead, and his queen Vindyavali brought the sacred pot of water. By worshipping Vamana’s feet, Bali fulfilled his promise and requested Vamana to take his gift of three measures of his footprint.

Bhagavan Vamana then immediately extended himself into a universal body. By the mercy of Bhagavan Vamana, Bali could see that the Lord is all-pervading and that everything rests in his body. Bali could see Bhagavan Vamana as the Virat Purusha who was Supreme Maha Vishnu, wearing his crown, His yellow garment, the mark of Srivatsa where Sri Lakshmi rests on his chest, the Kaustubha jewel, a flower garland, and ornaments decorating his entire body. The Lord gradually covered the entire surface of the world, and by extending his body he covered the entire sky. Therefore, there was no vacant place where he could take his third footstep.

Seeing how Bali had lost his all to Bhagavan's Vamana avatara, the Asuras around Bali became very angry. They said they will fight and destroy Vamana for this trick, on behalf of Bali who had avowed peace during the Yajna. But Vishnu's attendants countered them decisively. Seeing his Asuras losing their lives, Bali stopped the fight. He pleaded,

Bali said, " Oh Viprachitti, Rahu, Nemi, please hear my words! Don’t fight. Stop immediately, for the present time is not in our favour. The supreme factor Time, which represents Bhagavan, was previously in our favour and not in favour of the Devas, but now the tables are turned. No one can surpass Bhagavan as Time or Kaala by material power, strategem, intelligence, diplomacy, fortresses, mystic mantras, medicinal herbs, or any other means. (Note the idea of bio-warfare here!)"

As directed by Bhagavan, Garuda came and bound King Bali hand and foot with Varuna-pasha (the bindings of the netherworld). All the Asuras fled to the netherworld as their cause was lost.
***

Bhagavan addressed Bali.

"Oh, King Bali, remember your gift of the three paces of land. Of your possessions, with one step I have occupied Bhuloka, and with my body, I have occupied the entire sky and all directions. And in your presence, with my second step, I have occupied the heavens. Because you have been unable to give the gift according to your promise, the rule is that you should go down to live in the hellish netherworld. Therefore, in accordance with the order of your Guru, Sage Shukracharya, your spiritual master, now go down and live there."

Bali presented the sight of a king who had lost his all, but not his spirit and composure in this adversity.

***

Bhagavan said: “My dear Lord Brahma, because of material opulence a foolish person becomes dull-witted and mad. Thus, he has no respect for anyone within the three worlds and defies even my authority. To such a person I show special favour by first taking away all his possessions (Since adversity teaches the greatest lessons).”

“In the cycle of birth and death again and again in different species, by one’s good Karma, one may happen to become a human being. This human birth is very rarely obtained. If a human being is born in an aristocratic family or a higher status of life, if he performs wonderful activities, if he is youthful, if he has personal beauty, good education and good wealth, and if he is nonetheless not proud of his opulence, it is to be understood that he is especially favoured by Bhagavan.

“Although aristocratic birth and other such opulence are impediments to advancement in the path of Bhakti because they are causes of false prestige and pride, this opulence never disturbs a pure devotee of Bhagavan. King Bali has become the most famous among the Asuras and contrarians, for in spite of being bereft of all material opulence, he is fixed in his Bhakti and Dharma.”

“Although bereft of his riches, fallen from his original position, defeated and arrested by his enemies, rebuked and deserted by his relatives and friends, although suffering the pain of being bound and although rebuked and cursed by his spiritual master, King Bali, being fixed in his vow, did not give up his truthfulness. It was certainly with the pretension that I spoke about Dharma, but he did not give up Dharma, for he is true to his word. Because of his great tolerance, I have given him a place not obtainable even by the gods. He will become King of heaven during the period of the Manu known as Savarni."

"Until King Bali achieves the position of King of heaven, he shall live on the planet Sutala, which was made by Vishwakarma according to my order. Because it is specially protected by me, it is free from mental and bodily miseries, fatigue, dizziness, defeat and all other disturbances. Dear King Bali, the future Indra! You may now live there peacefully, surrounded by your friends and relatives. All good fortune unto you. No one will be able to conquer you, as you shall be protected by my Sudarshana Chakra!"

"Oh great hero, I shall always be with you and give you protection in all respects along with your associates and paraphernalia. Moreover, you will always be able to see me there. You will also be purified of all false tendencies you may have acquired by association with Asuras and Danavas.”

The great soul King Bali experienced that the highest gain in life is to attain devotional service under the shelter of the Lord’s lotus feet in full surrender. Being firmly rooted in this thought, his heart full of ecstatic devotion and his eyes full of tears, he offered obeisances to Bhagavan Vamana. Then, with his associates, he entered the planet known as Sutala.

Bali said: "What an incredible effect there is of even attempting to offer respectful obeisances to you! I was bound up and unable to properly prostrate even. But my desire itself pleased you, Oh Lord! The causeless mercy you have shown to me, a fallen Asura, was never achieved even by the gods or other celestials."

Takeway: In Bhagavan's Leela, everyone, yes, everyone, experiences Maya, suffering and joy, and the results of his or her Karma driven by ego. This is inescapable. But equally, those who establish themselves in Bhakti become mere actors, enjoying Bhagavan's Leela! Bali is a great example.

Srimad Bhagavatam XII - snippet 3 - 28 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 3- Monday, 28 August 2023 - The flawed character called Indra.
***

If we start thinking how fascinating and encyclopedic is the range of characters that inhabit our Puranas and Itihasas, the one name that springs up at once is that of Indra. Indra is the son of Aditi and Sage Kashyapa, appointed as the King of gods or Devendra.  He has a wonderful heaven called Amaravati. He is surrounded by other gods, sages and musicians and dancers. Manmatha, the god of man-woman love, obeys his commands.

It appears that Bhagavan Maha Vishnu has a soft corner for Indra. He gets him out of trouble every time, but mostly after teaching him a lesson. Why? No better answer than that it is Bhagavan’s Leela. In the end, we almost never like Indra.

Indra is indeed a FLAWED CHARACTER. He symbolises Power without Grace.
Let us see some snippets of Indra’s deeds. Links provided.

In this story, Urvashi, originally created by Nara Narayana out of his own thigh to show Indra that he should not be too proud of his Apasara army he unleashes on sages to tempt them, becomes the chief of Apsaras. She falls in love with King Pururavas. Finding her missing in his court, Indra is very upset! Failing to see Urvashi any longer in the heavenly region, felt that heaven was not worth living in without her, and despatched Gandharvas to bring her back. This caused untold misery to both Urvashi and Pururavas.

Indra, the lord of all gods, was seated in his splendid heavenly assembly, with all the gods and celestials in attendance and offering their praises to him. Lord Brihaspati, the spiritual Guru of the gods, entered the assembly. Indra, being too absorbed in his own power and opulence, forgot himself and did not show respect to his Guru. Brihaspati realised that Indra's arrogance had to be tamed. he at once left the assembly, clearly indicating he had disowned Indra and the gods. This led to untold troubles for Indra.

Indra wants to kill Vrittra, created to avenge the murder of Indra’s guru that Indra himself committed. He had also killed Vrittra’s brother. Vrittra is an Asura, but a devotee of Maha Vishnu!
When Vrittra saw Indra, his enemy, the killer of his brother, standing before him with a thunderbolt in his hand, desiring to fight, he became mad with anger. Laughing sarcastically, he spoke as follows:
"He who has killed a Brahmin, he who has killed his spiritual master — indeed, he who has killed my brother — is now, by good fortune, standing before me face to face as my enemy. O most abominable Indra, when I pierce your stonelike heart with my trident, I shall be freed from my debt to my brother."
"Indra, you are bereft of all shame, mercy, glory and good fortune.  I shall strike you with my trident, and after you die with great pain, even fire will not touch you; only the vultures will eat your body."
"On the other hand, if I am killed with your Vajra, thunderbolt, I shall thus be relieved of my obligations to the reactions of my karma, and my fortune will be to receive the dust from the lotus feet of great devotees like Narada".

The story of Bali is wonderful. Grandson of the great Prahlada, Bali was full of great qualities, and in no way inferior to Indra. After the gods got Amrita, they managed to defeat Bali’s army. But Shukracharya who knew the art of Sanjivani brought Bali back to life and also made him very powerful.
Indra enquired, in a quivering voice, of his guru, Brihaspati: how come Bali had become so powerful!?

T: Brihaspati spoke: “Oh Indra, I know the cause for your enemy’s becoming so powerful. The sages descended from Sage Bhrigu, being worshipped by Bali, their disciple, have endowed him with such extraordinary power. Neither you nor your men can conquer this most powerful Bali. Indeed, no one but Bhagavan can conquer him, for he is now equipped with the supreme spiritual power called Brahma- Tejas. Like Yama, he is irresistible. Therefore, wait until the situation of your enemies turns adverse (by the play of Time!). Indra, you should all leave this heaven and go elsewhere, where you will not be seen.”
“A time will come when Bali will incur the displeasure of sages and fall from his powerful status.”

Bhagavan took the incarnation of Vamana, and put Bali into Sutala as its emperor, clearing the way for Indra to assume his position in heaven. But Bhagavan graced Bali much more than he ever did Indra and even became the doorkeeper of Bali’s palace. This should show us that Bhagavan allowed Indra to play his role as the king with power without grace, just as a part of the cosmic script in Bhagavan’s Leela.
There are many other stories of Indra’s excesses. I shall confine myself to just one more. How Indra was taught a lesson by Bhagavan Sri Krishna!

https://rsachi.blogspot.com/2023/04/srimad-bhagavatam-x-a25-21-april-2023.html
When Sri Krishna made the Gopas worship the Govardhana hill instead of doing Yajna to Indra, Indra was furious. Thus, the Saamvartaka deluge was let loose unwisely by Indra. It poured down in utter fury, and wreaked havoc among the cowherds and cows. They all were first bewildered, then terrorised, and rushed to Sri Krishna in desperation. "Oh, Krishna! We are being destroyed by this downpour and winds! Please save us! Save us!"

T: Sri Krishna, who was none other than Bhagavan Sri Hari, knew at once that this rain of hailstones, these terrific winds, this torrential deluge, were all the acts of Indra. "Indra wants to destroy us because we defied the system of propitiating him. The only way to tame Indra is to employ My Yogic power. I have to break down the ego, and self-centred ignorance of Indra thinking that he is the overlord of creation. Indeed, the gods are essentially made up of Sattva Guna, and this aberration of arrogance in Indra, their king, should be broken so the gods see the light. I shall therefore protect these cowherds and their people and the cows and other helpless animals by using My Yogic power. After all, it is My proclaimed vow to protect My devotees!"

T: Having said this, Sri Krishna, who is Bhagavan Maha Vishnu Himself, picked up the Govardhana Hill with one hand and held it aloft just as easily as a child holds up a mushroom! The Lord then addressed the cowherd community:
"O Mother, O Father, O residents of Vraja, if you wish you may now come under this hill with your cows. You should have no fear that this mountain will fall from My hand. And don’t be afraid of the wind and rain, for I have taken care of your protection from all these difficulties."

Finally, Indra had to eat humble pie, bite the dust and apologise to Sri Krishna.

All these stories show us that the arrogance of power and prestige is the worst impediment to goodness and devotion.

Srimad Bhagavatam XII. snippet 2 - 27 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 2- Sunday, 27  August 2023 - How to speak with God?
***

When I can speak with Bhagavan face-to-face, what do I say?

In this snippet #2, I want to discuss how we are able to experience the grace of Bhagavan in the most immersive way when he grants us Darshan. (By the way, for sometime now, I have stopped capitalising the pronouns referring to Bhagavan because I think it robs the words of the intimacy they should convey.)

Anyway, when we have Bhagavan's Darshan, in a Supreme Person form, as Bhagavan Vishnu or Shiva or Bhagavati Devi, how do we respond? First of all, this Darshan is not a chance encounter. There is our intense Tapas and Bhakti which results in this Darshan. When it does happen, we are surely going to be overwhelmed. This is what happened to the five-year old Dhruva!

Dhruva, deeply insulted by his step-mother and father, was encouraged by his mother to go and ask the Lord for justice. He was, by the grace of Sage Narada, able to go and perform the most intense Tapas, while chanting the Maha Mantra ॥

Then the Lord came and gave him Darshan! Dhruva was unable to speak until Bhagavan himself opened up the floodgates of his faculties by touching his cheek gently with his Shankha. At once, Dhurva burst into his famous prayer योऽन्तः प्रविश्य... Please read the blog.
Now did Dhruva ask, "How come I was insulted? How can I get justice?" No! Indeed he said something altogether different.

"Those who seek a higher life in exalted Lokas are also bound to fall back into rebirth."

"Oh infinite Lord, bless me that I associate with Bhagavatas, and develop constant Bhakti, and serve You. I shall surely get liberated thus, and I hanker to hear Your glories always. A Bhakta is at once freed from attachments to things and people as "I" and "Mine"."

It is a different matter that Dhruva had to live out his accumulated Prarabdha Karma and become a king etc. But in the end, he reached Bhagavan and became the Pole Star, the epitome of constancy of faith!

The second example, again of a small boy, who got to speak face-to-face with Bhagavan, is that of Prahlada. Prahlada, although a very young boy, is considered the foremost Bhakta in Sanatana Dharma. When Bhagavan came as Narasimha Avatara, he tore his devilish father to pieces, and saved Prahlada. It took a while for the world to calm down the Lord as he was most most enraged at the way Hiranyakashipu tortured and tried to kill Prahlada, his devotee. Therefore if ever you think you are good and true and someone tries to harm you, pray as ardently as Prahlada, and Narasimha will SURELY SAVE YOU.

What then were Prahlada's words? Please read this:

Some excerpts:

I consider even a man of very low birth. a man born In the caste of dog-eaters, who has offered his mind, words, hopes, objects of desire. and vital energy to the Lord, as immensely superior to a  Brahmin possessed of the twelve qualifications mentioned above but is still indifferent to the Lord's holy feet. This is because the former purifies even his tribe, while the latter has only pride as his asset and not purity.

The Lord, who is self-fulfilled by his own inherent bliss, does not solicit the worship of ignorant man for any purpose of his own. He accepts it only out of concern for the welfare of the worshipper. For, whatever offerings are made by people to the worshipful Lord return as his blessings to themselves. Just as the beauty that a face derives from adornments only goes to beautify its reflection in the mirror.

O Lord! Sages generally concern themselves only with their own salvation. They strive for it in solitude, without any thought for the salvation of others. But I do not desire salvation for myself alone, abandoning all other creatures to their miserable condition. I find no shelter other than Thee for these creatures caught in the travails of Samsara.  (So if Thou art pleased to save me from Samsara, I am willing to accept it only on condition that all my fellow sufferers too are saved.)

***

These two are some of the best examples of prayer. From little boys when they got the Darshan of Bhagavan!

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 1 - 26 August 2023

Srimad Bhagavatam - snippet 1- Saturday, 26  August 2023 - Why was Srimad Bhagavatam written?
***
In this snippet #1, I want to reflect on this post:

https://rsachi.blogspot.com/2022/08/srimad-bhagavatam-105-29-august-2022.html

Sage Vyasa is regarded as an Amsha (partial) incarnation of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu himself, who has come down to earth to organise the Vedas and instruct mankind. He is the author of the world’s greatest epic, Mahabharata.

In this scene, he is sitting in despondency when Devarshi Narada visits him. Narada sports a smile as he travels around the three worlds playing his Veena and instilling Bhakti in all.

Vyasa is asked by Narada to explain his sadness, and he replies:

त्वं पर्यटन् अर्क इव त्रिलोकीमन्तश्चरो वायुरिवात्मसाक्षी परावरे भ्रह्मणि स्नातस्य मे न्यूनमलं विचक्ष्व

T: “Sage Narada, you move in the three worlds like the Sun, travel everywhere like the wind, and you know what’s within all as you can enter into everyone like the Vayu/Prana enters us. So, pray tell me, even after knowing Brahman, what is lacking in me, why do I feel unfulfilled?”

Vyasa is here the archetypical Jnani. Jnanis or intellectuals may win Nobel Prizes, compose the greatest literature, and become an icon of free thinking. But deep within, they feel the lack of something.

Indeed, irrespective of age, gender, education, wealth and health, name and fame, we all are after only one thing. That is bliss - that abiding inner happiness that does not increase with indulgence nor wane with time.

Bliss seems to be within us, asking us to reach for it, but we are looking for it elsewhere. I firmly believe that bliss is reached when we find love. Love which is in the moment, and not demanding anything.

Even when we say we love somebody or something, deep within, we know we are loving ourselves, and are seeking a response that gives us bliss. It is easy to intuit that the seed of that bliss is within. It is the first inkling we have of what we call God or Bhagavan. If God is not bliss or love, he does not exist.

Our response to God's or Bhagavan's constant flow of true love is called Bhakti, directed towards the embodiment of love, eternal and universally present, is Bhagavan.

Sage Narada describes what kind of literary work is to be avoided of we want to develop Bhakti.

T: “Oh Sage, however brilliant a literary work, if it is devoid of devotional inspirations, the Paramahamsas who dwell in the Lord’s abode of bliss and peace avoid them, like swans avoid the inferior lakes habited by crows alone.”

Those wise sages know that any inducements to seek bliss outside are misdirected.

T: “Even if a work is full of literary mistakes, if it sings of the glorious names of the Lord Achyuta, the saints revel in listening to them, chanting and singing those lines.” He is talking of a literary work since Vyasa is the world's greatest writer.

This means that any work that inculcates true prayer is not a MENSA or PULITZER or GRAMMYwinning expression, because Bhakti is an ardent soul-to-soul interaction. It can even be wordless and silent.

Important: We should not think of Achyuta or Maha Vishnu or Narayana or Srinivasa or Balaji as one particular deity or image or idol in a specific temple like Tirupati. Bhagavan takes whatever form I aspire to love, Shiva, Shakti, or whatever. The only thing needed is a single pointed devotion to your chosen form. Then it becomes Bhagavan. Bhagavan here means the infinite being, the Supreme Living Entity, not a thing.

Bhagavan is

Universal

Always loving

Always within us

Always reachable when we seek him/her/it within.

To attain Bhagavan, we have to make the greatest sacrifice possible. We should stop looking for bliss outside of ourselves in a world that is impermanent in a series of body and mind games. It is our Gunas (inherent propensities) that drive us out = That is Maya within. The delusions of bliss that we run after outside = Maya all around us! What keeps us in this cycle of Maya? Our accumulated Karmas. Bhakti is the catalyst that converts the paradigm of Karma into the paradigm of Dharma… doing every act as a worship of Bhagavan.

Once we find Bhagavan inside, we will see that Maya is merely a Leela or play in which we are play-acting our worldly roles, whatever they may be. We are connected to the fount of bliss within through Bhakti and are merely play-acting our human lives like ordinary people. This is called Bhagavan’s Vishwa Leela.

We can understand this beyond doubt by going through Srimad Bhagavatam.

That is the entire subject of Srimad Bhagavatam. Sage Vyasa wrote Srimad Bhagavatam after Sage Narada instructed him as discussed. That was the end of his despondency.
