Shloka 18- Sri Varadarajastava

एकत्र मन्मथमजीजनदिन्दिरायां पूर्वं भवानिति बुधाः किमपूर्वमाहुः ।

अद्यापि तं न जनयस्यरविन्दनाभ कासु प्रसन्नमधुरस्मित कामिनीषु ॥१८॥

T: Oh, Lord Padmanābha, scholars state that long ago You created Manmatha the God of Love in Devi Śrī Lakṣmī. This is nothing to be considered incredible (unprecedented). Indeed, even today, doesn't Your most pleasant and smiling countenance invoke the God of Love Manmatha in women who behold You? 

Explanation: It is not a matter of surprise when scholars learned in Purāṇās state that once upon a time, Lord Viṣṇu's son born to Devi Śrī Lakṣmī was Manmatha, the God of Love. The beauty and attractiveness of  Lord Śrī Varadarāja is fully capable of stirring the passion of Śṛṅgāra Bhāva in any woman who beholds Him. This is the import of this stanza. (Devi Śrī Lakṣmī as His consort experienced the birth of Manmatha the God of Love on her feelings being stirred by Lord Śrī Varadarāja. This happens somewhat similarly even today to any woman who beholds Him!)

The word Manmatha is used here as Śleṣa (pun or double meaning) as it refers to the God of Love as well as Śṛṅgāra Bhāva ( churns one's being through passion). This is clever on the part of the poet!

Oh, the Lord with the lotus in Your navel (from which Brahma the Creator was born!)! Oh, the one with the bewitchingly sweet, smiling countenance! On the one hand, scholars state that once upon a time, You fathered the God of Love, Manmatha through Your consort, Devi Śrī Lakṣmī! What is incredible or unprecedented in that? Even now, is there any women in whom your attractiveness does not generate Manmatha (Love)?
