मातङ्गशैलमणिशृङ्गमहाविमानसोपानपर्वचतुरुत्तरविंशतिर्या ।
तामेव तत्त्वविततिं पुरुषो विलङ्घ्य पश्यन् भवन्तमुपयाति भवाब्धिपारम् ॥
T: In order to reach the great spire (Mahā Vimāna) which sits atop the bejewelled crest of the elephant rock (Hastiśaila), there are twenty-four steps to be climbed. These are the same twenty-four Tattvas (components of the created universe). The seeker who climbs these twenty-four steps attains Your vision and crosses the ocean of worldly existence!
Explanation: In Sāṅkhya Darśana (one of the six fundamental pillars of Sanatana Dharma thought), there are twenty-four components of creation listed: Mūla Prakṛti, Mahat Tattva, Ahaṅkāra, Pañca Tanmātra, Pañca Mahābhūta, Pañca Jñānendriya, Pañca Karmendriya, and Manas - roughly translated as Primordial Nature, Core consciousness, Ego, five meta-elements, five gross elements, five senses of perception, five senses of action and the mind. By comprehending the reality of these, one finally comprehends Puruṣa or the Soul of Creation, which is the twenty-fifth component of creation. The soul when liberated rests in this Puruṣa. The twenty-four steps in the Śrī Varadarāja temple are indeed the twenty-four Sāṅkhya Darśana constituents. The one who transcends them is the Puruṣa, just as the seeker devotee who climbs those twenty-four steps! Hence the Darshan of the Lord Śrī Varadarāja is the experience of liberation, according to the poet. Bhava or worldly reality is the same as Samsāra or the Ocean to be crossed. This metaphor is Rūpakālaṅkāra (रूपकालङ्कार).
