T: Sage Shuka narrated: After hearing the secret message and plea sent by Princess Rukmini through the Brahmin, Sr Krishna, Yadu Nandana, took the Brahmin’s hand and, smilingly said: "Just as Rukmini’s mind is fixed on me, my mind too is fixed on her! I can’t even sleep at night. I know that Rukmi, out of political envy, has forbidden our marriage. Rukmini has dedicated herself exclusively to me, and her beauty is flawless. I will bring her here after thrashing those worthless kings in battle, just as one brings a blazing flame out of firewood."

Since Sri Krishna knew the exact time of the wedding Muhurta, he asked his charioteer to get the vehicle ready. Charioteer Daruka brought the Lord’s chariot, yoked with the horses named Shaibya, Sugriva, Meghapushpa and Balahaka. It is noteworthy that Shuka mentions the names of these horses that drew Bhagavan’s chariot at His will. Daruka stood with joined palms indicating it was ready. The valiant Sri Krishna mounted the chariot along with the Brahmin. They travelled rapidly and reached Vidarbha in a single night.

T: King Bhishmaka was under his son’s influence. He made all the preparations for the grand wedding of Rukmini with Shishupala with great enthusiasm. The king had the main avenues, traders’ alleys and intersections thoroughly cleaned and then sprinkled with water for the dust to settle down. The city was decorated with triumphant archways and multicoloured banners on poles. The men and women of the city, arrayed in spotless raiment and anointed with fragrant sandalwood paste, wore precious necklaces, flower garlands and jewelled ornaments, and their opulent homes were filled with the aroma of aguru.
Bhishmaka worshipped the forefathers, gods and Brahmins, feeding them all properly, as per ritual. Then he had the traditional mantras chanted for the well-being of the bride.

The bride cleaned her teeth and bathed, after which she put on the auspicious wedding necklace. Then she was dressed in brand-new upper and lower garments adorned with most excellent ornaments. Brahmins chanted mantras of the Rik, Sama, and Yajur Vedas for the bride’s protection, and the priest learned in the Atharva Veda offered oblations to pacify the guardian planets. The learned King Bhishmaka rewarded the Brahmins with gold, silver, clothes, cows and sesame seeds mixed with raw sugar as per tradition.

Shishupala’s father, the king of Chedi, also engaged Brahmins to perform the rituals to propitiate their forefathers for blessing. His name was Damaghosha, and he led the bridegroom’s party in regal splendour with his army to Vidarbha. He was received most cordially by Bhishmaka and the host put up the groom’s party in well-appointed accommodation.

Shishupala’s supporter kings, Shalva, Jarasandha, Dantavaktra, and Vidurartha, were all present in full strength along with their armies.

All these rivals of Sri Krishna and Balarama conferred: “If Krishna comes here with Balarama and the other Yadus to steal the bride, we shall band together and fight him.” That is why those envious kings arrived at the wedding with their entire armies and a full complement of military conveyances.

T: When Balarama heard about the arrival of the inimical kings at Vidarbha and how Sri Krishna had proceeded alone to steal Rukmini, the bride, he feared that a fight would ensue. Balarama, who loved Sri Krishna, hurried to Kundina (the capital of Vidarbha) with a mighty Yadu army consisting of infantry and of soldiers riding on elephants, horses and chariots.

T: Princess Rukmini, the lovely daughter of King Bhishmaka, anxiously awaited the arrival of Sri Krishna, but she did not see the Brahmin also return. Full of anxiety, she thought, "Alas, my wedding will be conducted tonight. How unlucky am I, Sri Krishna hasn’t come yet! No sign of my Brahmin emissary, either. Perhaps Sri Krishna was willing but saw some lacuna in me and therefore has not come to take my hand."

"I think Brahma is against me. Even the great Lord Shiva, and Devi Parvati, seem not well disposed towards me. I am lost!"

As she thought in this way, the young maiden, whose mind had been stolen by Sri Krishna, closed her tear-filled eyes, realising that there was still time. Just then, Rukmini felt many auspicious omens -a twitch in her left thigh, arm and eye. This was a sign that something favourable would happen.

Just then, the Brahmin emissary, most learned, returned. He entered the inner chamber of the palace to meet Rukmini. She noted instantly his cheerful countenance and serenity. She could expertly read his body language. She smiled. The Brahmin said simply, “Sri Krishna is already here. He wants to marry you.” Rukmini was ecstatic. She had nothing ready at hand. She simply bowed down to the Brahmin in gratitude.

T: The King, upon hearing that Sri Krishna and Balarama had also arrived and were eager to witness his daughter’s wedding, went forth with abundant offerings to greet them as music resounded. He received them with offerings of honey, clothes and so on as per custom. He also had them accommodated very well along with their army. Thus, Bhishmaka did not let any shortcomings occur in his reception of all the kings and nobles with their armies who had arrived for the wedding.

Just then, the residents of Vidarbha heard that Sri Krishna had come. They all went to see him. It appeared they had cupped their eyes with their hands to drink him in. They spoke as if in one voice: "Rukmini alone deserves to be the queen of Sri Krishna. He is also so perfect in his handsomeness that he alone is suitable to wed our Rukmini!"

T:" Sri Krishna is the Creator of the three worlds. May this Achyuta (literally the infallible) wed our princess Rukmini in case He is satisfied with our past deeds in line with Dharma and is compassionate."

Amidst all such chatter, Rukmini, protected by the love of the citizens and physically by the armed guards, proceeded from the inner chamber to visit the temple of Goddess Ambika Parvati.

T: In the midst of musical chants and the sounding of conches, bugles and drums, Rukmini proceeded on foot towards the Devi temple with the ladies of the palace including her mothers, surrounded by armed guards. She had only one prayer on her mind… to Sri Krishna. The retinue behind Rukmini was long and everyone carried offerings to the Deity, singing and reciting prayers and bearing gifts of garlands, scents, clothing and jewellery. There were also professional singers, musicians, bards, chroniclers and heralds. Upon reaching the Devi temple, Rukmini first washed her tender lotus-like feet and hands and then sipped water for purification. Thus sanctified and peaceful, she came into the presence of Mother Ambika Bhavani Parvati.

The older wives of Brahmins, experts in the knowledge of rituals, led young Rukmini in offering respects to Bhavani, who appeared with her consort, Lord Shiva himself.

Rukmini prayed: “Oh, Mother Ambika, wife of Lord Shiva, I repeatedly offer my obeisances unto you, together with your children. May Sri Krishna become my husband. Please grant this!”

Rukmini worshipped the goddess with water, scents, whole grains, incense, clothing, garlands, necklaces, jewellery and other prescribed offerings and gifts, and also Nirajana or the waving of lamps.

The Brahmin women led the prayers by offering in proper sequence savouries and cakes, prepared betel nuts, sacred threads, fruit and sugarcane juice. The ladies gave the bride the remnants of the offerings and then blessed her. She bowed down to them and the Deity and accepted the Prasada.

The princess then broke her vow of silence as her ritual had been well completed. She left the Devi temple holding on to a maidservant with her hand, sporting a jewelled ring.

Now something strange happened. It appeared as if all the kings who had come to the ceremony, immediately after seeing Princess Rukmini, went into a trance. They were enchanted by Bhagavan’s Maha Maya in the form of Rukmini! Indeed, her power overwhelms even the sober and the grave. Thus the kings gazed upon her virgin beauty, her shapely waist, and her lovely face adorned with earrings. Her hips were graced with a jewel-studded belt, her figure was just budding into the appearance of a full-grown woman. She constantly swept away the tender locks of hair coming over her eyes. She smiled sweetly, her jasmine-bud teeth reflecting the glow of her bimba-red lips. As she walked with the motions of a royal swan, the effulgence of her tinkling ankle bells beautified her feet.

Seeing her, the assembled heroes were totally bewildered. Lust tore at their hearts. Indeed, when the kings saw her broad smile and shy glance, they became stupefied, dropped their weapons and fell unconscious to the ground from their elephants, chariots and horses. We should understand that the full radiance of Princess Rukmini’s charm was directed during the trip to the temple towards Sri Krishna alone. She was anxious for Sri Krishna to come and take her away. She moved with tender lotus feet slowly, looking from the corners of her eyes.

At that moment, she saw Sri Krishna. Then, while his enemies looked on in a daze, the Lord seized the princess, who was eager to mount his chariot. Lifting the princess onto his chariot whose flag bore the emblem of Garuda, Lord Madhava pushed through the lineup of kings. With Balarama in the lead, hee slowly exited, like a lion removing his prey from the midst of jackals.

Suddenly, it seemed that all the kings inimical to Sri Krishna, led by Jarāsandha, realised that they had been foiled again. They could not tolerate this humiliating defeat. They exclaimed, “Oh, damn us! Though we are mighty archers, mere cowherds have stolen our honour, just as puny animals might steal the honour of lions!”

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.52 - 23 May 2023

॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

23 May 2023, Tuesday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.52 - Princess Rukmini of Vidarbha sends a messenger with her letter professing love to Sri Krishna, urging him to come and wed her.
***

King Muchukunda experienced the grace of Bhagavan Sri Krishna and proceeded to Badarikashrama, the abode of Nara - Narayana, for his austerities. He noticed how in Kaliyuga, all life forms had shrunk in size and energy.

Balarama and Sri Krishna went back to Mathura. It was still surrounded by the Yavana army although their king was dead. They attacked the brothers who fought them off and secured access to the valuables still left behind by the citizens when they were teleported to Dwaraka overnight. While proceeding to Dwaraka with a caravan of the belongings of Mathura citizens, under the brothers' escort, Jarasandha who was waiting with his 23 Akshauhini army attacked them. Seeing his fierce attack, Balarama and Sri Krishna abandoned the caravan of valuables and started running. Jarasandha and his army followed in hot pursuit. When the two brothers climbed a mountain called Pravarshana. Jarasandha lighted a fierce fire all around the mountain that spread fast and climbed up to the top of the mountain burning all life.

Meanwhile, Sri Krishna and Balarama jumped off miraculously and proceeded silently to Dwaraka. Thinking that they had perished in the fire, a happy Jarasandha returned to Magadha with his forces.

As briefly stated before, the king of Raivata gave his daughter Revati in marriage to Balarama, under the advice of Lord Brahma. Bhagavan Sri Krishna also proceeded to attend the wedding ceremony of Princess Rukmini of Vidarbha. This was an event-filled episode as Sri Krishna had to take away Rukmini who was deeply in love with him by fighting off Shalva and other kings who sided with Shishupala of Chedi, Sri Krishna's cousin. In fact, Rukmi, the elder brother of Rukmini who ruled the Vidarbha kingdom overriding his living father, Bhishmaka, wanted Rukmini to marry Shishupala for political reasons.

King Parikshit now asked Sage Shuka if indeed Bhagavan had married Rukmini following the Rakshasa custom, as he had heard before. How did he overcome Shalva and others who opposed him while taking away Rukmini? Parikshit added that each such story of Sri Krishna had important pieces of wisdom and showered grace on the listener.

Sage Shuka replied: "Indeed, Rukmini's brother Rukmi wanted her to marry only Shishupala. But she had heard about Sri Krishna."

T: "Hearing of the beauty, prowess, transcendental character and opulence of Mukunda Sri Krishna from visitors to the palace who sang his praises, Rukmini decided in her mind that he would make the perfect husband for her. At the same time, Sri Krishna knew that Rukmini possessed intelligence, auspicious bodily markings, magnanimity, beauty, perfect demeanour and all other good qualities. Concluding that she would be an ideal wife for him, Sri Krishna made up his mind to marry her."

T: "Dark-eyed Rukmini, who was aware of Rukmi's plan, was deeply distraught. Analyzing the situation, she quickly sent a trustworthy Brahmin as her messenger to Sri Krishna. Upon reaching Dwaraka, the Brahmin was ushered into the presence of Bhagavan Sri Krishna sitting on his throne. Sri Krishna came down from his exalted throne to receive the Brahmin with all respect and ceremony.

After worshipping him, feeding him a sumptuous feast, and massaging his feet while he rested, Sri Krishna enquired if the Brahmin led an unhindered life of meditation and prayer, essential for a Brahmin. He said how contentment was the yardstick to assess if a Brahmin was leading a successful Dharmic life or was pursuing desires that ensured misery and a life of hell thereafter.

Then, gently, Sri Krishna asked the Brahmin if the king of Vidarbha looked after Brahmins like him well and ensured prosperity for all. And what had brought the Brahmin this far, making him enter the impregnable Dwaraka, crossing the ocean all around it? This was now the cue for the Brahmin to deliver the message from Princess Rukmini.

T: Rukmini's letter was read out by the Brahmin: "Oh the embodiment of beauty of the worlds, the descriptions of your divine qualities remove my bodily distress the moment I hear them. Sri Krishna, I have heard how just one look at your astounding beauty satisfies forever the desires of anyone in respect of seeking to see beauty. Therefore, Sri Krishna, I now confess my unabashed love for you. Oh, Mukunda, you are equal only to yourself (i.e. you are non-pareil) in lineage, character, beauty, knowledge, youthfulness, wealth and influence."

" Oh, lion among men, You delight the minds of all mankind. What aristocratic, sober-minded and marriageable girl of a good family would not choose you for a husband when the proper time comes? Therefore, my dear lord, I have chosen you as my husband, and I surrender myself to you. Please come swiftly, oh almighty one, and make me your wife. My dear lotus-eyed lord, make sure that Shishupala never touches the hero’s portion like a jackal stealing the property of a lion."

(Note: This simile reveals the Kshatriya blood in the girl, drawing a simile from the lord of the forest and his prey.)

"If my worship of the Supreme Being till now through performing Dharmic deeds, Yajnas, charity, rituals and vows of austerity, and also worshipping the gods, Brahmins and gurus, has been true and efficacious, then may Gadagraja (name of Sri Krishna whose younger brother Gada was born to Vasudeva through another queen) come and take my hand, and not Damaghosha’s son (Shishupala) or anyone else!"

"Oh unconquerable Sri Krishna, tomorrow when my marriage ceremony arranged with Shishupala is about to begin, You should arrive unseen in Vidarbha along with your army. Then please crush the forces of Shishupala and Jarasandha and marry me in the Rakshasa way (i.e. abduction by force), winning me with your valour!"

"Please note this carefully. Since I am confined within the inner, ladies' ,quarter of the palace, you may wonder how to take me away without killing the women guarding me. But there is a way! Just the day before the wedding, we will go on a procession to worship our family deity Ma Durga in the Girija Temple. I will therefore be in that group in open spaces and accessible. "

T: "Oh, lotus-eyed Lord! I know that even great souls like Lord Shiva hanker to bathe in the dust of your lotus feet in order to overcome the delusory effect of Maya that hides Paramatma. If I cannot obtain your mercy, I shall simply give up my life breath, as I am weakened already from my severe penances. Then, I will have to wait for many lifetimes to secure your compassion!"

The Brahmin concluded gravely, "My Lord! This is the message I have brought from Princess Rukmini. Kindly consider her plea and do what you deem best. "

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.51 - 22 May 2023

॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

22 May 2023, Monday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.51 - The destruction of Kalayavana by "running away" and the salvation of the devotee King Muchukunda.
***
Sri Krishna emerged from the main gate of Mathura within the sight of Kalayavana. He appeared as the four-armed magnificent figure of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu.

T: Kalayavana thought: "Why, of course, this is the Vasudeva Sri Krishna that Narada told me to go and fight! See his Srivatsa mark on the chest! His divine ornaments, garlands, the golden yellow garment all give him away! How come he is holding no weapons!? Does he already know how foolhardy it is to fight me? And why is he running away!???"
Thus thinking, Kalayavana went in hot pursuit of Sri Krishna. Sage Shuka remarks, "Here was Kalayanava chasing the one whom even the best of Yogis find it impossible to catch up with!"

As Sri Krishna teased him, appearing to be almost within his grasp but getting away, Kalayavana shouted, "Hey, Krishna! It doesn't behove you to run away from the enemy, you belong to the famous Yadu dynasty!"

Sri Krishna continued running.

Now Sri Krishna entered a deep cave. As Kalayavana chased after him, his eyes took some time to adjust to the dark cave. Then, Kalayavana saw a figure sleeping there, covering himself with a cloth. "Bah, what a coward this Krishna is! He thinks he can deceive me by appearing to be asleep!" Kalayavana gave a powerful kick to the recumbent figure.

The man, who seemed to have been long asleep there, woke up startled and looked around. Then his eyes rested on Kalayavana standing right there. The moment he was seen by the sleeper, Kalayavana burst into a flame and died.

King Parikshit had a question. "Dear Sage, who was that sleeping man, of whose lineage? How come he had this power to burn down Kalayavana!? Why was he asleep in that cave at all? Please clarify!"

Sage Shuka smiled and continued. "Oh, King, this was the great Ikshwaku lineage king Muchukunda, son of King Mandhata. Both his father and he had helped the gods fight off the Asuras. In fact, Muchukunda once engaged in a very long battle with Asuras whom he finally vanquished. The gods then profusely thanked him. They made him aware that the battle had lasted so long that now, none in his family or circle of acquaintances and ministers and nobles was any more alive.  He had done the ultimate sacrifice of giving his lifetime to the gods. "Oh, Muchukunda, right now the world is controlled by one demoniac king called Kalayavana. He has been created as invincible as Vishnu Himself. Anyway, this is of no concern to you perhaps. You can ask us for any boon. However, we cannot grant you liberation - that is the prerogative of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu alone."  Muchukunda was already terribly exhausted and badly needed rest from the external world. So he asked for this unusual boon - to have unbroken sleep. The gods granted that and also said that Muchukunda's sleep should not be disturbed by anyone as the first person Muchukunda sets his eyes on when woken up shall be burnt to death.

This was therefore Sri Krishna's ploy, and now by running away he had drawn Kalayavana to the cave, made him wake up Muchukunda, inviting the curse to be reduced to ashes!

Now Muchukunda saw the divine figure of Bhagavan, the complete form of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu, radiant like all the suns, shining like the dark blue cloud against a mountain, and wearing divine ornaments and garlands, sporting the Srivatsa mark on His chest. Muchukunda was bewildered.

T: Muchukunda spoke: " Dear Lord, who are you? Why have you come here? For what reason are Your tender lotus feet taking you to these rough places? Perhaps you are Bhagavan Narayana Himself as I surmise.  Kindly introduce yourself. I am, by the way, Muchukunda of the Ikshwakus. I have been here long asleep to recover from a very extended period of physical and mental exertion in war. This man who came and woke me up suffered the consequence of his  violating my sleep. Then I saw you. Sir, you are so brilliant that no one can set eyes on you. I feel lustreless in your presence." To this, Bhagavan Sri Krishna began to answer, smilingly.

T: Bhagavan answered: "Dear Muchukunda, no one can unravel my birth, deeds or lineage. I have thousands of names, so I cannot list them now. amy names and forms exceed the number of grains of sand on the shore! The great sages like Sanaka Sanandana constantly sing my praises. Even they cannot exhaust my descriptions! In any case, I shall tell you of my present birth and antecedents."

T: "In this time, acceding to Brahma's request, to protect Dharma, to cleanse the earth of evil, I have taken birth as the son of the Yadu chief Vasudeva. First Kamsa, an incarnation of the Asura Kalanemi, then Pralamba and now Kalayavana who was reduced to ashes within your sight, have been destroyed by me. I came here expressly to bless you. Long ago, you had asked for my grace and here I am. You can ask for any boon you desire. Those under my care never come to grief."

Now Muchukunda connected this to what Sage Garga had once told him and realised this was Bhagavan Narayana Himself.

He prayed:" Oh, Lord, by Your Yogamaya, engrossed in this world of attachments to family and fortune, I have never prayed to You before. My entire life has been spent as a King engaged in worldly affairs and attachments. By Your grace, now, in one stroke all is erased. I am able to see how a king is engrossed in a life of pomp, power and pleasure, not realising that Time ensures all this will end in the body becoming food for earthworms or being burnt to ashes. The birth and death cycle all go on like this until Karmas are exhausted when the company of the holy instils the urge to see the Eternal Truth and develop devotion. You have asked me to ask for boons. I shall not fall for this trap again. Please give me devotion and liberation."

Bhagavan replied, most gratified with Muchukunda's free choice to ask for freedom. He said, "Muchukunda, by your devotion now, you shall be able to go about this world without attachment and harbouring my thoughts always. Your past Karmas as a king including killing innocent animals in the forest while hunting will need to play out till they are exhausted. Then you shall be born again as a devout Brahmin and attain to Me, the embodiment of Eternal Truth and Pure consciousness."

॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

21 May 2023, Sunday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.50 - This begins the second part of Dashamaskandha. Jarasandha attacks Mathura seventeen times with a huge army. Sri Krishna and Balarama drive him away but spare his life. When he attacks the eighteenth time, Sri Krishna creates Dwaraka, a divine city safe from attack.
***
The daughters of King Jarasandha of Magadha named Asti and Prapti were widowed by the death of his son-in-law, Kamsa. They went to their father's home crying about their fate. Jarasandha was an extremely powerful and evil king who decided to avenge the death of Kamsa. He came with a very huge army ( 23 Akshauhinis, bigger than  the combined armies in the Mahabharata war.) Sri Krishna and Balarama decided to defend Mathura against this attack and destroy the enemy army that looked like a tsunami wave. After all, this incarnation of Sri Krishna was to eradicate the evil of undesirable kings from the face of this earth. Just in accordance with Bhagavan's decision, two divine chariots filled with several weapons descended from heaven. Balarama followed Sri Krishna's instruction that this was their moment to start cleansing the earth of evil Kshatriyas. They both put on the armour in the chariots and approached the battlefield in their respective chariots. They sounded their conches that made such a huge impact that Jarasandha's soldiers tottered in fear.

Seeing the young brothers in their chariots, Jarasandha shouted to Sri Krishna, "Oh, you rascal Krishna! I have come here to show the world what happens to people like you. You have killed your own uncle. Better you save yourself and run away. Balarama, you seem a bit bigger and can perhaps face me. You will probably go to heaven fighting unless you defeat me."

श्रीभगवानुवाच
न वै शूरा विकत्थन्ते दर्शयन्त्येव पौरुषम् । न गृह्णीमो वचो राजन्नातुरस्य मुमूर्षतः ॥
T: Sri Krishna replied, " Indeed, Jarasandha! Any great warrior will not boast like you are doing. Like one should ignore the words of a dying man blabbering in a delirium, I ignore your words. Come and face us!"

श्रीशुक उवाच

T: Sage Shuka narrated: The war was most fierce as the huge army surrounded the brothers in attack, raising blinding dust. None could see the chariots of Balarama and Sri Krishna with their flags of Palm Tree and Garuda. The womenfolk of Mathura saw this from their terraces and began to murmur in utter anxiety that Sri Krishna and Balarama would be in distress surrounded by such a mighty army.

Sri Krishna picked up the Sharnga bow sent as an offering by Indra. He shot countless arrows that systematically decimated the Jarasandha army. At that moment, Sri Krishna's Sharnga bow looked like a rapidly spinning wheel of fire. Soon the battlefield was a river of blood shed by the enemy soldiers and their weapons and dead bodies and chariots looked like flotsam in a rapidly flowing river.

Soon, Balarama was able to destroy everyone else and only Jarasandha, stranded without his chariot, was left. As Balarama went and caught hold of him by his hair and was about to kill him, Sri Krishna shouted, "Dear Brother, don't kill Jarasandha! Let him go. There is a reason why we should spare him now (as he will play a role in the future turn of events serving our cause by his evil conduct!)

Thus, Jarasandha returned utterly humiliated. Sri Krishna's incarnation was now entering the second phase where Sri Krishna was restoring Dharma among kings by cleansing the earth of evil.

The people of Mathura as well as all the gods celebrated Sri Krishna's victory with trumpets, drums, songs, and a shower of flowers and sacred grains on Sri Krishna and Balarama as they entered Mathura victorious.

Jarasandha soon returned with an equally big army. The result was the same. Thus, every time he came and attacked with his huge army, everyone would be killed by Sri Krishna and Balarama, but he would be spared. He did not bother to think why. But he attacked seventeen times like this.

अष्टादशमसङ्ग्रामे आगामिनि तदन्तरा । नारदप्रेषितो वीरो यवनः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥
T: Jarasandha came an eighteenth time. On a provocation by Sage Narada, simultaneously, an adversary by the name  of Kalayavana (literally means a foreign invader). He came with an army of 3 crore soldiers from abroad. Kalayavana was invincible and none could kill him.

This time, Sri Krishna said, "Enough of these attacks on the peaceable folk of Mathura. Jarasandha and Kalayavana are going to attack on two sides and this is not good for the people of Mathura. We cannot simultaneously fight two such formidable enemies. The safe thing is to relocate ourselves beyond the reach of Jarasandha."

Sri Krishna decided to create an impenetrable fort on an island in the sea. He summoned the architect of gods, Vishwakarma. He explained to him what kind of a city was to be created at once. Vishwakarma did so overnight. What emerged was the famed city of Dwaraka.

T:  In the construction of that city could be seen the full scientific knowledge and architectural skill of Vishwakarma. There were wide avenues, and commercial districts set in wide open spaces along with splendid parks, and gardens stocked with trees and creepers. There were golden turrets on gateway towers that touched the sky. Houses were beautifully set up, with a shrine for prayer in each. Sri Krishna's palace was magnifient. Indra's gift was the Sudharma Hall. It conferred immortality for anyone who entered. He also gifted the famed Parijata tree. Varuna gave swift horses, Kubera offered mystic treasures as did other gods. In fact, the gods conferred all the powers they had gotten from Maha Vishnu for the fulfilment of His avatara.

तत्र योगप्रभावेण नीत्वा सर्वजनं हरिः । प्रजापालेन रामेण कृष्णः समनुमन्त्रितः ।
निर्जगाम पुरद्वारात्पद्ममाली निरायुधः ॥
T; Using his Yogic Maya Shakti, Bhagavan teleported all the citizens of Mathura instantly to Dwaraka to be protected and ruled by Balarama. What remained in Mathura was a ghost city with nothing worthwhile.
The ultimate Leela Manusha Vigraha, the Lord who enacted His divine sport always as a human, now went forward to encounter the enemy at the gate of Mathura, wearing a garland of lotuses but bearing no weapons! More divine acts were soon to follow.
