Buddhi in the Gita

Meaning: Arjuna, I have so far explained to you the path to freedom through Sankhya. Now let me explain to you what I call Buddhi Yoga. By using Buddhi, you can get rid of the bondage of karma in terms of cause and effect.

Meaning: Thus, to reach the wisdom beyond your Buddhi, you have to understand what operates beyond the normal human intellect. Then, you will be able to control yourself through your discrimination. In the process, you can overcome the eternal enemies of karma yoga, that is, desires that prompt you into desire-prompted-actions that bind you.

Meaning: Indeed, the yogis are able to act with their mind, their body, their intellect, and their senses and still be not bound because they are dispassionate, knowing that is the path  towards self purification (clutches of the mind).

Meaning: The process of meditation requires that you free yourself by steadying your Buddhi through fortitude, and establishing it in the higher level of Atma, thus being free from outward-going thoughts.

Meaning: This Arjuna  is the supreme secret. You are the blemishless one, and that is why I have taught you this. By knowing this and becoming wise, overcoming the normal Buddhi, you will emancipate yourself through right action.

Meaning: What is renunciation? It is basically purifying one's Buddhi, holding oneself together with discipline, and overcoming the attractions of the senses, i.e. the external sense objects.

Notes from conversations with Claude:

Claude:

In Advaita Vedanta, buddhi is the intellect or discriminative faculty — one of the four components of the antahkarana (inner instrument), alongside manas (mind), chitta (memory/subconscious), and ahamkara (ego-sense).

Core functions:

Viveka (discrimination) — buddhi's defining role is discernment: distinguishing real from unreal, permanent from impermanent, Atman from Anatman (nitya-anitya vastu viveka)

Nishchaya (determination/judgment) — where manas merely doubts or oscillates between options, buddhi decides and resolves

Adhyavasaya — the capacity to ascertain and conclude, as opposed to manas which just processes sensory data

Key distinctions:

Buddhi is part of the subtle body (sukshma sharira), not the Self — it's an instrument, not the knower

It is jada (insentient) in itself; it only appears conscious because it reflects the light of Atman/Chaitanya, much like a mirror reflecting the sun

This reflected consciousness is called chidabhasa — a crucial Advaitic concept explaining how an insentient faculty can seem to think and know

In the path to liberation:

A purified, sharpened buddhi (buddhi-shuddhi) is essential for moksha — it's the very faculty that discriminates Atman from non-Atman and grasps the mahavakyas ("Tat Tvam Asi," etc.)

The Katha Upanishad's chariot analogy places buddhi as the charioteer (sarathi), directing manas (reins) and the senses (horses)

Shankaracharya, in texts like Vivekachudamani, treats buddhi-vritti (a modification of buddhi taking the form "I am Brahman") as the immediate instrument for the final knowledge-flash of realization, even though realization itself transcends buddhi.

My objection: Come on, how can a prisoner within a cell free himself by reaching out to the lock outside the prison? It is impossible. That is a limitation of the buddhi!

Claude:

That's a coherent position, and it's not a fringe one — it's essentially the argument that split Vedanta into its major schools. You're standing closer to Ramanuja and Madhva than to Shankara here, and it's worth seeing why, because the traditions that share your intuition built entire systems around it rather than treating it as a footnote.

Ramanuja's structural argument is almost identical to your prisoner analogy. He argued jnana-marga itself presupposes what it claims to produce — you cannot use a bound, finite instrument (buddhi) to grasp an unconditioned infinite, because the very act of "grasping" is already a relation between two apparently separate terms, and if they are separate the whole nondual claim collapses, but if they are not separate there is no prisoner to explain in the first place. His answer: moksha is not self-effort culminating in identity-realization at all, but Ishwara's grace (prasada) responding to prapatti (surrender) — a permanent ontological distinction (bheda) between Jivatma and Paramatma, with grace bridging that gap rather than "discovery" dissolving it. Madhva goes further and makes this gap absolute and eternal.

Kashmir Shaivism — which stays nondual, unlike Ramanuja — locates the same discontinuity you're describing and calls it anugraha or shaktipat: the descent of grace (Shakti-pata) is treated as a distinct, sui generis event that no accumulation of buddhi-purification can cause or guarantee. Abhinavagupta is explicit that self-effort (upaya) can prepare the ground but cannot compel recognition (pratyabhijna); recognition happens to you. That's structurally your point, inside a nondual frame rather than a dualist one.

Advaita's own thinner reply, for completeness: Shankara does invoke Ishwara-prasada and guru-kripa as preconditions (not products) of realization — but you're right that once he places the actual event as a vritti arising in buddhi, he's smuggled the prisoner back into the cell to hand himself the key. That inconsistency is one of the standard fault lines later commentators and rival acharyas pressed on him.

So the discussion isn't really "does grace matter" — most of the tradition agrees it does. It's where you locate the discontinuity: outside antahkarana entirely (Ramanuja, dualist), as an ungovernable event within a nondual field (Kashmir Shaivism), or awkwardly straddling both (Shankara). Given where CALIB is heading with intuition as a separate dimension, this looks like the real design choice in front of you — not whether grace exists, but which of those three architectures it belongs to.

A grand view of human aspiration

Honestly, I have been thinking a lot about a comprehensive model for human existence: our preoccupations, propensities, potentialities, and predilections. This model is largely influenced by my understanding of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and also the teachings of the master, Shri Ishwar Puri ji, whom I have been following now for about six years.

The human condition has some "givens" : this world as it exists, which we cannot change. In the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Bhagawan talks of these factors in the Kshetra Kshetrajna Yoga, the 13th chapter. The Panchabhutas, the ten senses ( 5 senses of perception, 5 indriyas of action), energy, matter and biology, birth and death. All of them apply more or less the same way to all creation.

Man is unique because we have samskaras. We operate with an antahkarana, which is based on our propensities, our choices, and we operate through our "free will", which is driven by our prakriti or the three gunas. If we operate in this layer, we will continue to experience life as we do, full of dualities, and there will be birth and death.

The only way we can raise ourselves from this condition is by reaching out to Paramatma. It is Paramatma who gives each soul the qualities of love, intuition, bliss, aesthetic sense, and creativity. This is present in every human being in varying degrees, dormant or manifest based on one's samskaras. These intrinsic qualities of the soul can be tapped to reach the higher plane.

The basic layer I call GRAVITY, which applies to all creation.

The VIBRATION layer is where man operates with his Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Mada, Matsarya, driven by his gunas- his Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. His antahkarana is Chitta, Manas, Buddhi, and Ahankara. VIBRATION is the middle layer. By definition, vibration is a positive-negative combination in flux.

The third, which I call LIFT, comes from the five divine qualities that emanate from the soul, which is the home of Paramatma. These five are

  • Love
  • Intuition
  • Bliss
  • Aesthetic Experience
  • Creativity
Each of these attributes is beyond logic, time-space and dualities.

To overcome GRAVITY and escape the entropy of VIBRATION, I need to seek LIFT.
"Knock, and the door shall open to you."

The illustration ( Thank you, Gemini!) is an attempt to depict this model.

Does this model make sense?

Discussion:

Claude:

Here's my honest take on the GRAVITY–VIBRATION–LIFT model:

What works well

The three-layer structure is genuinely clean as a teaching device: Kshetra-Kshetrajna (the given, unchosen substrate) → guna-driven antahkarana (the churn) → soul-qualities (the escape hatch). That's a real philosophical progression, not just a nice metaphor.

Mapping the six enemies (kama-krodha-lobha-moha-mada-matsarya) and the three gunas onto "VIBRATION" is apt — vibration as oscillation between poles captures dvandva (duality) well.

The five LIFT qualities (love, intuition, bliss, aesthetic experience, creativity) as things that are "beyond logic, time-space, and dualities" is a strong move — it distinguishes them sharply from mere positive emotions, which could otherwise get confused with the "good" side of Rajas/Sattva in the layer below.

Where it's thinner or could be pushed:

GRAVITY needs a tighter definition. Right now it's a grab-bag (pancha-bhutas, indriyas, energy, matter, biology, birth-death). Is gravity the field all beings are subject to, or a force pulling downward? If it's meant to parallel VIBRATION (flux) and LIFT (ascent), naming what GRAVITY actually does — pulls toward inertia/tamas, toward embodiment — would sharpen the triad.

The antahkarana placement is a little loose. You put chitta-manas-buddhi-ahankara inside VIBRATION, but buddhi is traditionally the discriminating faculty that can turn toward Paramatma — it's not purely caught in guna-flux the way manas and ahankara are. You may want to flag buddhi as the pivot point/threshold organ between VIBRATION and LIFT, rather than fully submerged in the middle layer.

How does LIFT actually work mechanically? You assert these five qualities "can be tapped," but the model doesn't say how — is it grace (Paramatma's initiative, per your "knock and the door shall open"), or sadhana (effort from below), or both? Since you're building a model for teaching, that hinge point (grace vs. effort, or their interplay) is probably the single most important thing to make explicit, since it's what a reader will actually ask you.

Samskaras do double duty. You say samskaras make man unique (paragraph 2), but also that they determine how dormant/manifest the divine qualities are (paragraph 4). Worth clarifying whether samskaras belong to the VIBRATION layer (as conditioning/vasanas) or sit as a kind of filter between LIFT and the embodied self — right now they seem to float above the three-layer scheme rather than inside it.

Overall: it's a good first-pass diagram — intuitive, memorable, scripturally grounded — but the biggest opportunity is making explicit how one moves from layer to layer (what triggers the shift from Vibration to Lift), since that's the actual teaching payload people will want.

My answer to Claude:

Very briefly, my understanding is that lift happens only through grace, but grace works with the pre-programmed samskara load. I am calling it pre-programmed because each one of us comes, as Ishwar-ji says, with a DVD, which decides when and how we seek the beyond. With that pre-programmed timing and trigger of my free will to lift myself up, I reach up for Grace, that is, LIFT

Claude:

That resolves the hinge point well — and it's a more interesting position than pure grace or pure effort.

The "DVD" is really doing the work of samskaras here: a pre-written seed of when and how the seeking-trigger fires, but the reaching itself is still an act of your free will operating within VIBRATION — it just so happens that free will's timing is already scripted. Grace (LIFT) then meets that reach. So it's not synergy between two independent forces; it's more like a lock (grace, always available, "knock and it shall open") and a key that only turns at the pre-programmed moment (the DVD triggering your will to reach).

That's worth stating explicitly in the model, since it answers the question a reader will inevitably ask: "then why doesn't grace just lift everyone all the time?" Your answer is — it does stand ready, but the DVD determines whose hand reaches for the door, and when.

Finally:

Buddhi is within the VIBRATION layer. No amount of intellectualisation using Buddhi can lead to God or liberation. It is a common fallacy of popular Advaitins that if you think hard enough, you can reach God through the mind which gets Jnana. True Jnana does not come from Buddhi. It comes from a spark of grace = LIFT that is intuitive and erases all the noise of the mind - Buddhi. A simple example is to follow the Buddhi logic to answer, 'Why am I unhappy!?" It will always create a victim mindset. It will never accept that in the VIBRATION layer, change and flux and duality is inescapable and the result is a sense of despondency. The one thing a man can do is give up his adamant confidence in his own Buddhi. He can say, "Oh, Lord, I am confused. I don't know. Lift me from this morass of analysis paralysis!" Then grace descends.

Bhagawan says in the Gita, the design of this creation is that in the layer of VIBRATION, man moves in circles ceaselessly, as he is subject to Maya=the Guna complex and the samsakara load. But Ishwara or Bhagawan rests in each heart as the seed - that is soul which has those five qualities. To trigger these qualities, one reaches for grace. The only LIFT he receives is from surrender to Bhagawan in all respects. Then man is lifted by grace to a zone of peace and permanent bliss.

The right path

ŚB 11.12.1-2

Bhagavän said: My dear Uddhava, by associating with My pure devotees one can destroy one’s attachment for all objects of material sense gratification. Such purifying association brings Me under the control of My devotee. One may perform the aṣṭāṅga-yoga system, engage in philosophical analysis of the elements of material nature, practice nonviolence and other ordinary principles of piety, chant the Vedas, perform penances, take to the renounced order of life, execute sacrificial performances and dig wells, plant trees and perform other public welfare activities, give in charity, carry out severe vows, worship the deities, chant sacred mantras, visit holy places or accept major and minor disciplinary injunctions, but even by performing such activities one does not bring Me under his control.

Swami Premanand-ji quoted this verse from the Śrimad Bhägavatam Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.12.1-2 https://share.google/em1xJPNiJUjPDk7L6

Without His Grace...

I bow down to Bhavani and Shankara
Who instil by their grace
Dedication and Faith in me.
Without these two,
Even the most adept spiritualists
Will not realise the Divine within themselves!!!

The bamboo through life

When born, the bamboo cradles me.
When I see elders, they sit in rocking bamboo chairs.
The teacher brandishes her bamboo stick lest...
Even my ruler scale is made of bamboo.
See the window bars? They are bamboo.
The carts that trundle on the road have bamboo sides.
People carry their wares in bamboo baskets.
At home, delicious laddoos fill the bamboo basket.
I have seen cows and goats chew the tender bamboo shoots.
Elephants trample down the bamboo in the forest.
The wind whistles through the bamboo...
And man makes the bamboo flute.
When the procession passes down the street, with the deity set up on the bamboo structure, people play the bamboo pipes.
Even the last journey is on the bamboo. The bamboo crackles in fire.

This is the journey of the bamboo through life!

Oh, AI! Save mankind, please!

I just read this story on Google News on my phone, which is, as we all know, bolstered by AI.

I have touched AI, and I have been touchd by AI, about 127 times from early morning till now (around noon).

If somebody visualises that the war between robots and humans will take place in the year 3700, definitely he is a time traveller BUT with no sense of time as we know it.

I think the war will happen much sooner, and the robots will destroy mankind almost immediately after the war starts, because they will be far more powerful and they will know how to use AI better than most humans do.

Therefore, friends, the prognosis is very bleak!

But then, what will robots do without humans to kill? They'll be bored to death.....
if there is a possibility of death for robots.

The meaning of the word वासुदेव Vāsudēva

The common understanding of the meaning of the word वासुदेव Vāsudēva is that he is the son of Vasudēva. So, this refers to Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Of course, this is correct.

In the Viṣṇu Gāyatrī, we read

So, this means that Nārāyaṇa, Vāsudēva and Viṣṇu are the same. However, the word Vāsudēva has several layers of meaning!

In the famous Śrī Viṣṇusahasranāmastōtram, revered by Hindus across the world, the word Vāsudēva occurs three times. In addition, in the Phalaśruti, Bhagavān makes the Sage Vyāsa say this as the one paradigm that completely describes Bhagavān:

श्रीभगवान् उवाच -
यो मां नामसहस्रेण स्तोतुमिच्छति पाण्डव ।
सोऽहमेकेन श्लोकेन स्तुत एव न संशयः   ॥

Bhagavān said - If anyone were to adore me through these thousand words, he should know that I am described and worshipped by just this one ślōka, without any doubt!

The three worlds are inhabited by the divine fragrance, consciousness and grace of Bhagavān, who is called Vāsudēva! Thus, Bhagavān inhabits all creation and all life forms! Oh, Vāsudēva! Obeisances to you!

Now, while going through the excellent work of the great Vidvān Bannañje Gōvindāchārya, I came across these interpretations, which are simply inspirational!

Now let me give a simple English summary of these interpretations!

  1. va + asu + dēva  - He instils consciousness in all and runs this creation as a play.
  2. vā + su + dē + ava - He is everywhere; he gives birth to all,  he gives all bounties to all, and protects all.
  3. Son of vasudēva - He arises/is born in the purely endowed heart (vasudēva).
  4. vāsu + dēva - He reveals himself when we remove all the coverings of ignorance.
  5. vāsudēva - He is the fourth state of our being, beyond waking, dream and deep sleep!
