Srimad Bhagavatam VIII.14 - 14 February 2023

॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

Tuesday, 14 February 2023 - Srimad Bhagavatam VIII.14- How Bhagavan runs the universe through different Yugas.
***

Parikshit wanted to know from Sage Shuka how Manu and the others in each manvantara were engaged in their respective duties, and by whose order they were so engaged.

Sage Shuka said: The Manus, the sons of Manu, the great sages, the Indras and all the  Devas, Oh King, are appointed by Bhagavan Maha Vishnu in His various incarnations already described such as Yajna. The Manus and others are chosen by these incarnations, under whose direction they conduct all affairs of the universe.

At the end of every four yugas, the great sages, upon seeing that the eternal Dharma categorised as occupational duties of mankind have languished, re-establish the Dharma across the four Varnas.

Devas also receive their offerings during Yajnas.

Indra, the king of heaven, receiving Bhagavan’s grace and living in great prosperity, maintains the living entities all over the three worlds by pouring sufficient rain.

ज्ञानं चानुयुगं ब्रूते हरि: सिद्धस्वरूपधृक् ।
ऋषिरूपधर: कर्म योगं योगेशरूपधृक् ॥
T: In every yuga, Bhagavan Sri Hari assumes the form of Siddhas (such as Sanaka) to preach transcendental knowledge, He assumes the form of great sages (such as Yajnavalkya) to teach the way of Karma, and He assumes the form of great Yogis (such as Dattatreya) to teach the system of mystic yoga.

In the form of Prajapati Marichi, Bhagavan creates progeny. Becoming the king in each region, He punishes wrong-doers, thieves and rogues. In the form of Time, He annihilates everything. All the different qualities of material existence (Prakriti) should be understood to be qualities of the Purushottama, Bhagavan Himself.

People, in general, are bewildered by Maya, and therefore they have to strive to find the Absolute Truth, Paramatma, through various types of Sadhana and Chintana (cogitation). Nonetheless, they are unable to see the Supreme Lord this way.

In one kalpa, or one day of Brahma, there take place many changes called vikalpas, as already described. Learned scholars who know the past, present and future have ascertained that in one day of Brahma there are fourteen Manus.
