Maitreem Bhajata

Bharata Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi performed at the United Nations on 23 October 1966. The audience of delegates from several nations were treated to pure Carnatic music. The concert itself was an event to remember for all who cherish Indian culture and our music.

The final song that day was an ode to peace and brotherhood composed by Kanchi Maha Periyavaa. The words in Sanskrit are as follows:

मैत्रीं भजत अखिलहृज्जेत्रीम्
आत्मवदेव परान्नपि पश्यत ।
युद्धं त्यजत स्पर्धां त्यजत
त्यजत परेषु अक्रममाक्रमणम् ॥
जननी पृथिवी कामदुघाऽऽस्ते
जनको देवः सकलदयालुः ।
दाम्यत दत्त दयध्वं जनताः
श्रेयो भूयात् सकलजनानाम् ॥

I give below my translation:
Oh people, celebrate and extol friendship and camaraderie, for that is the way to conquer the world!
Indeed, see everyone else as you see yourselves - we are all one!

Give up war! Give up this senseless competition and arms race. And, of course, give up acts of aggression and invasion.

Earth, the wish-fulfilling Kamadhenu, is indeed the mother for all of us! Our father in heaven is all compassion and love. Are we all not bound by this feeling of oneness?

Restrain the tendencies of aggression. Give generously. Be compassionate to others.

Let all prosper! Let all be happy! Let all be fulfilled!

The Sordid Truth

I heard this song sung by P. Kalinga Rao looong back. I now heard a version sung recently! The words are so poignant I feel compelled to share the song lyrics here with my meaning.

Who is your true well-wisher here? - Purandaradasa
Pray, who is your well-wisher amongst these three - woman, land and wealth?
  1. After you bring a lady born in someone else's house, make her lord over your home, call her your better, inseparable half...When the time comes, she will shrink from even seeing you (dead).
  2. Calling as your own a piece of land owned by countless masters in the past, getting your Khata, building your eminent home...When life leaves you, they will throw you (body) out of that mansion at once.
  3. Profession, business, serving the ruler; all with deftness, craftiness, betrayals, claiming that all your wealth has been earned by your sheer brilliance...soon, who will be enjoying all this wealth you shall leave behind willy nilly?
  4. Surely your wife, children and near ones will mourn your passing. But once life leaves you, all this acquisition is worth nothing. The only two things that will go with you forever are your good and bad deeds - your Karma!
  5. Don't trust this impermanent body as yours forever. Remember Hari's feet when all is going well. Purify your mind and realise that Vitthala is your best bet after all...and praying to Him you can be truly happy!

Kaprekar Constant 6174

This number was discovered for its magic by a school teacher, Mr. Kaprekar (1905-1986) of India:
  1. Write any 4 digit number (the four numbers should not be the same digit).
  2. Reorder the digits to get the biggest number with those digits.
  3. Again reorder the digits to get the smallest number.
  4. Subtract 3 from 2
  5. The new number - repeat steps 2 and 3.
  6. Repeat step 4 for the new biggest and smallest numbers.
  7. Within seven iterations, you will arrive at the Kaprekar Constant 6174!
Here are five examples. go ahead, try it yourself!
