Srimad Bhagavatam VI.01 - 24 December 2022

Saturday, 24 December 2022 VI.01 -  The story of Ajamila.

***

This chapter begins with a retrospect of what has been covered so far in the first five Skandhas in the words of King Parikshit. The process of creation, the impetus for the liberation of the Jiva, the grace of the Lord in different circumstances, the great rule of Manu's progeny, and the role of Yajna, Tapas, Dharma, and most importantly the practice of Bhakti, have all been discussed.

Now Parikshit has a concern. If a person has committed misdeeds deemed to be sinful, and he is going to suffer the hellish consequences, is there any way he can avert the results? How can he atone for his sins?

Sage Shuka begins with a clear statement on this:

If, before one’s forthcoming death, whatever impious acts one has performed in this life with one's mind, words and body are not counteracted through proper atonement according to shastras, one will certainly enter the hellish planets after death and undergo terrible suffering. As an expert physician diagnoses and treats a disease according to its gravity, one should experience atonement according to the severity of one’s sins.

No doubt anyone can see the consequences of sins just as citizens learn to be righteous and dutiful by witnessing a public administration of punishment to criminals meted out by the government. But what about the natural tendencies which impel one to wrong conduct by the force of the Gunas? Therefore, this process of repeated sinning and atoning has to be useless. It is like an elephant has a fine bath in the river but comes out and splashes mud all over himself in great joy.

What causes wrong conduct? Ignorance of the eternal verities. Thus even though one may be superficially pious, one will undoubtedly be prone to act impiously. Therefore real atonement is enlightenment in perfect knowledge by which one understands the Supreme Absolute Truth.

T: Devotion to Bhagavan Vasudeva is the best cleanser. It dispels sin as quickly as the sun dispels darkness completely.

The role of cultivating devotion is illustrated now by the recounting of the famous story of Ajamila.

Ajamila was a high-class Brahmin in Kanyakubja. He was brought up well but eventually adopted a despicable lifestyle of sin given to looting, dacoity, and so on. He managed to bring a prostitute home, and ignoring his chaste and beautiful young wife, spent all his time and energies on that fallen woman. He begot ten sons in that prostitute, the last one of whom was named Narayana and was Ajamila's favourite as he was a very young lad. Ajamila had a great attachment to Narayana and his childhood pranks, spending most of the time with the boy and cuddling him and playing with him.

When Ajamila was eighty-eight years old, Yama sent his messengers to bring Ajamila whose time was up, Ajamila saw extremely ugly creatures coming to him and cried out, in utter dismay, his dear son's name, "Narayana!" Upon hearing that, the messengers in the employ of Maha Vishnu Sriman Narayana rushed to the spot as was their practice, to help any devotee of Narayana who called out in distress.

Yama's messengers were snatching the soul from the core of the heart of Ajamila, the husband of the prostitute, but with resounding voices, the messengers of Lord Vishnu forbade them to do so. Naturally, Yama's messengers asked who these newcomers were, and how they had the audacity to challenge the jurisdiction of Yama.  "Who are you, sirs? Are you gods from the heavenly planets, are you celestials, or are you the best of devotees? You are dressed divinely with four arms each, carrying swords, conches, clubs, lotuses, and discs (Chakras) like Lord Vishnu!"

Vishnu's messengers replied with a smile. "If you are messengers of Yama, pray, tell us what is the rationale for meting out punishments. What is right conduct and what is punishable? What is the process of punishing others? Who are the actual candidates for punishment? Are all karmis engaged in fruitive activities punishable, or only some of them?"

Yama's men answered simply.

"The Vedas state what is Dharma, and they are the tenets of Bhagavan Narayana. This is what we have been taught by our Lord Yama. It is Narayana who runs this creation through the three Gunas. People follow the Varna-Ashrama Dharma under His order. The sun, fire, sky, air, gods, moon, evening, day, night, directions, water, land and Paramatma Himself all witness the activities of the Jiva."

"The candidates for punishment are those who are confirmed by these many witnesses to have deviated from their prescribed regulative duties. Everyone engaged in fruitive activities deserves punishment according to his sinful acts. Unlike you, who dwell in Vaikuntha,  those within this material world are all karmis, whether acting piously or impiously. Both kinds of action are possible for them because they are contaminated by the three modes of nature and must act accordingly. One who has accepted a material body cannot be inactive, and sinful action is inevitable for one acting under the modes of material nature. Therefore all the living entities within this material world are punishable. In proportion to the extent of one’s religious or irreligious actions in this life, one must enjoy or suffer the corresponding reactions of his Karma in the next."

"It is interesting that every Jiva's journey through happiness and sorrow is very much like the seasons that come in a predictable cycle. So also man acts in Karma and reaps its results cyclically."

"Yama is like Lord Brahma or even Bhagavan as he mentally observes the past activities of a living entity and thus understands how the living entity will act in future lives."

"Both the gross body and the transmigratory subtle body are made up of sixteen parts — the five knowledge-acquiring senses, the five working senses, the five objects of sense gratification, and the mind. This subtle body is an effect of the three modes of material nature. It is composed of insurmountably strong desires and therefore it causes the living entity to transmigrate from one body to another in human life, animal life and life as a god. When the living entity gets the body of a god, he is certainly very jubilant, when he gets a human body he is always in lamentation, and when he gets the body of an animal, he is always afraid. In all conditions, however, he is actually miserable. His miserable condition is called अनुसम्स्रति or transmigration in material life."

"In the beginning this Brahmin named Ajamila studied the Vedas. He was a reservoir of good character, good conduct and good qualities. Firmly established in executing all the Vedic injunctions, he was very mild and gentle, and he kept his mind and senses under control. Furthermore, he was always truthful, he knew how to chant the Vedic mantras, and he was also very pure. Ajamila was very respectful to Guru, Agni Devata, his guests, and elders. Indeed, he was free from false prestige. He was upright, benevolent to all living entities, and well-behaved. He would never speak nonsense or envy anyone."

"Once, Ajamila, on the order of his father, went to the forest to collect fruit, flowers and two kinds of grass, called samit and kusha. On the way home, he came upon a shudra, a very lusty, low-born man, who was shamelessly embracing and kissing a prostitute. The shudra was enjoying himself, and both the shudra and the prostitute were drunk. The prostitute’s eyes were rolling in intoxication, and her dress had become loose. Such was the condition in which Ajamila saw them."

"Ajamila's dormant lusty desires in his heart awakened, and he fell under the control of Maya. His efforts to pull himself together with his better sense failed. Soon afterwards, Ajamila brought the prostitute to his house as a servant. He began spending whatever money he had inherited from his father to satisfy the prostitute with various gifts so that she would remain pleased with him. He gave up his Brahminical way of life just to satisfy the prostitute. He even gave up the company of his very beautiful young wife, who came from a very respectable family. Eventually, Ajamila's life was steeped in sin. Now he is unclean and is addicted to forbidden activities."

"We shall take him into the presence of Lord Yama for punishment. There, according to the extent of his sinful acts, he will be punished and thus purified."

Srimad Bhagavatam V.26 - 23 December 2022

Friday, 23 December 2022 V.26 -  Here is a blood-curdling description of hell and what takes man to hell. Finally, Sage Shuka reinforces the importance of Bhakti. End of Skandha V.

***

A question arises from King Parikshit. Why do people behave the way they do? The answer from Sage Shuka is simple. Everyone is driven by his nature, composed of his Samskaras manifesting as the admixture of the three Gunas - Sattva, Rajas, Tamas. The Lord has given ample scope for man to think through the consequences of his action and learn from the past. But Maya or the play of Gunas is also a very strong force. Life is nothing but a tussle between the higher wisdom of man and the lower nature of Guna-driven instincts.

T: Just as by engaging in various pious activities one achieves different positions in heavenly life, by acting impiously one achieves different positions in hellish life. Those who  engage in impious activities according to the extent of their ignorance are placed in different grades of hellish life. If one acts in the mode of ignorance because of madness, his resulting misery is the least severe. One who acts impiously but knows the distinction between pious and impious activities is placed in a hell of intermediate severity. And for one who acts impiously and ignorantly with an incorrigible nature of Adharma, the resultant hellish life is the worst. Because of ignorance, every undergoes suffering in hell since time immemorial. I shall try to describe them as far as possible.

Now Sage Shuka gives a blood-curdling description of different types of hell, the different punishments there, and what transgression takes one to which hell. It pretty much covers the gamut of man's misdeeds we can imagine. I am unable to write all that myself. However it is surely worth a reading. So I have scanned Swami Tapasyananda's translation with the Sanskrit verses which I share below.

***
The final word that Sage Shuka has on this is as follows:

श्रुत्वा स्थूलं तथा सूक्ष्मं रूपं भगवतो यति: । स्थूले निर्जितमात्मानं शनै: सूक्ष्मं धिया नयेदिति ॥

T: Having heard of Bhagavan and the path of liberation, the aspirant called Yati (one who strives) meditates constantly on the gross and eventually the subtle form of Bhagavan and attains liberation as mentioned before.

This Skandha covered several descriptions of the universe and the different beings and their ways. It is encyclopedic and gives the world view in Sanatana Dharma. We should remember that Sage Vyasa lived at least 5000 years ago and wrote all this.

Srimad Bhagavatam V.25 - 22 December 2022

Thursday, 22 December 2022 V.25 -  Description of Lord Sankarshana, or Adishesha, also called Ananta, and a prayer to him.

***

Far below Paataala, the bottom of the netherworld we described, is the thousand-hooded Adishesha. he is also called Lord Sankarshana because he is so attractive. He is also called Ananta, and we read early on how Lord Brahma found his way about through his guidance. Lord Sankarshana is also a manifestation of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu alone, and he resides in the heart of Lord Shiva. Often, the Jiva can mistake Ananta for Bhagavan Himself.

Adishesha supports the entire creation of this earth on one of his heads, and he is so huge that the earth appears like a mustard seed in relation to his thousand hoods!

At the time of devastation, when Lord Ananta desires to destroy the entire creation, he becomes slightly angry. Then from between his two eyebrows appears three-eyed Rudra, carrying a trident. This Rudra, who is known as Sankarshana, is the embodiment of the eleven Rudras, or incarnations of Lord Shiva. He appears in order to devastate the entire creation. That is the dissolution.

There is a description of Ananta as a most attractive being, with hands and mirror-like shiny nails in which all his devotees see their beautiful reflections! When the beautiful princesses of the serpent kings, hoping for the Lord’s auspicious blessing, smear his arms with aguru pulp, sandalwood pulp and vermilion, the touch of his limbs awakens lusty desires within them. Understanding their minds, the Lord looks at the princesses with a merciful smile, and they become bashful.

There are more descriptions of his beauty, and that he holds the plough on his back, a reference to his incarnation as Balarama later.

Ananta is also another way of saying that the Lord is constantly, uninterruptedly established in Brahman consciousness.

The gods and other celestials and sages offer fervent prayers to Ananta. One of them is:

मूर्धन्यर्पितमणुवत्सहस्रमूर्ध्नो भूगोलं सगिरिसरित्समुद्रसत्त्वम् ।
आनन्त्यादनिमितविक्रमस्य भूम्न: को वीर्याण्यधिगणयेत्सहस्रजिह्व: ॥
T: This is the Lord of unlimited powers! He bears the world with all its great mountains, rivers, oceans, trees and living entities on his hood. Look at it, it is resting just like an atom on one of his many thousands of hoods. Is there anyone, even with thousands of tongues, who can describe his glories?

Sage Shuka now concludes this description of creation and various beings born in different bodies to work out their Karmas. He now asks, what would King Parikshit want to hear, next?

Srimad Bhagavatam V.24 - 21 December 2022

Wednesday, 21 December 2022 V.24 -  Description of the nether regions like Patala. Sage Shuka permits himself some commentary on the episode of Bali.

***

Sage Shuka describes in this chapter the nether regions, the seven regions called Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talātala, Mahātala, Rasātala and Pātāla. These are inhabited by serpent-like creatures with extraordinary powers of magic, might, and longevity. These are the abodes of famous serpents like Vasuki and Takshaka. They are extremely violent and poisonous and quarrelsome. They have created worlds of pleasure superior to any heaven and live in total abandon, addicted to sexual pleasures and other excesses. They are afraid of only Bhagavan Maha Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra which can decimate them easily. Even Indra is afraid of them and takes Maha Vishnu's help when needed. They share a chronic animosity towards the gods, sons of Aditi, as they are all offspring of Danu, Diti and so on. Garuda is often their nemesis.

On the planet Atala, the yawning of a demon has produced three kinds of women, called svairiṇī (independent), kāmiṇī (lusty) and puṁścalī (very easily subdued by men). These women capture any stranger who dares enter their domain and subjugate him through sex.
(👆Copied from Shila Prabhupada in parts).
***
Below Atala is the planet Vitala, wherein Lord Shiva and his wife Gauri reside. This aspect of Shiva is called  Hatakeshwara, as because of their presence, a kind of gold is produced called hāṭaka.
***

I give below an interesting section where Sage Shuka muses on the fate and fortune of Mahābali, the great devotee of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu, the grandson of Prahlada himself, who allowed his pride in his generosity to get the better of him momentarily when Maha Vishnu came as Vamana. I have scanned this section from Swami Tapasyanandaji.👇

***
Sutala and Mahābali (18-27)

18. Below that is the region called Sutala, where the great one Mahābali, noted for his generosity, lives. In order to help Indra, Lord Mahavishnu was born in Aditi as Vämana and took away the mastery of the worlds from Mahābali by a stratagem. But out of His grace, He sent Bali to Sutala where he lives in the midst of splendour, to which even Indra is a stranger. But in the midst of it all Mahābali continues to worship the Supreme Being by the discharge of his ordained duties as an offering unto Him.
19. This attainment of Sutala cannot be considered a direct result or reward for offering the world to the Lord. For, such a petty worldly fulfilment like the attainment of this subterranean heaven can never be an adequate reward for making an offering of this whole world with firm faith (Sraddha), readiness and concentration, to that Supreme Being Vasu- deva-the soul of all Jivas, the inner pervader, the controller of everything- when he presented himself before Bali as a worthy seeker of a favour. Such a whole-hearted adoration of the Lord should have brought on Bali the bliss of Moksha itself, not the paltry reward of a subterranean heaven.
20-21. By uttering His name once even with a feeling of distress while yawning, falling, or sustaining an injury, a man Overcomes the bondage of Karma, an at- Tainment for which aspirants following the disciplines of Samkhya and Yoga put themselves to endless troubles and difficulties. For making a true devotional and dedicated offering of the whole world to such an exalted Divinity who bestows Himself as also reveals Himself as one's own Self to all great devotees and men of the attainment of the joy of this enlightenment, such a worthless thing as a subterranean heaven is an absolutely incompatible reward.
22. The attainment of prosperity and facilities for enjoyment cannot even be considered a blessing in the case of a devotee; for prosperity is likely to make one forgetful of the Lord. So Mahābali's attainment of the subterranean heaven of Sutala should be attributed to his Prarabdha.
23. Finding no other way, the Lord in this incarnation as Vāmana adopted the stratagem of begging and thereby deprived Mahābali of all his possessions. Mahābali was then bound with the Varuna noose and shut up in a mountain cell. Even then, he says as follows without any dismay:
24. Indra and his trusted adviser Brihaspati are persons with little understanding of what constitutes the highest value of life. Abandoning Him, the Lord, who is the highest end for man to attain, they have utilised Him to get back from me such petty things as the world and its riches. They did not pray to be admitted as His servants. How insignificant is the lordship of these three worlds lasting for the duration of a Manvantara (about 71 Chatur-yugas) before infinite Time which is awe-inspiring to contemplate!
25. My grandfather Prahlada, after his father Hiranyakasipu's death, was offered by the Lord the whole of his patrimony which he could enjoy without fear of any rival, but he did not accept it, as those positions and riches would be disparate from the Lord. He sought only the privilege of being His servant. He is indeed a fortunate person! 26. It is impossible for persons like me, whose tendencies for worldly enjoyments have not been effaced and who have not received the Lord's grace, to think or dream of following the example of that great personage.
27. Later on (in the eighth Skandha) will be told the story of Mahābali, at whose gate stands Maha Vishnu Himself as a gatekeeper!
***

T: The Lord, overcome by His passionate love for devotees, the Supreme Lord, Sri Hari, Narayana, stands guard, armed with a mace as a gatekeeper outside the abode of his devotee, Mahābali. In that capacity, He threw the ten-headed Ravana several thousand Yojanas away with a flick of his toe when that Rakshasa approached the realm of Mahābali to challenge him in the course of Ravana's ugly march of conquest over the whole universe.

***

Then the chapter covers the personality of Rahu. Rahu is a terrible demon disguised as a god and seated between Surya and Chandra at the time Mohini comes to distribute Amrita after the churning of the ocean (this story is narrated in detail later). Rahu is exposed by Chandra and Surya as an imposter in their midst. Mohini strikes him and denies him Amrita. This engenders eternal enmity between him and Surya and Chandra. Sage Shuka says that Rahu tries to swallow the moon or the sun during an eclipse and only the fear of Maha Vishnu's Sudarshana which is released during the eclipse makes him run for his life and end the eclipse. Sage Shuka clarifies that calling it Grahana (swallowing) is the wrong term as Rahu does not succeed in swallowing either the moon or the sun. Interestingly, the idea of interposing the earth and sun/moon and obstructing the view of the other is what astronomers describe as an eclipse. Since Rahu is evil, we are advised to stay indoors and pray to Maha Vishnu during an eclipse.

Srimad Bhagavatam V.23 - 20 December 2022

Tuesday, 20 December 2022 V.23 -  The grand arrangement of all celestial beings and constellations around the abode of Maha Vishnu in Dhurva Loka - called as Shishumara.

***

Copied from Srila Prabhupada:

This chapter describes how all the planetary systems take shelter of the polestar, Dhruvaloka. It also describes the totality of these planetary systems to be Śiśumāra, another expansion of the external body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Dhruvaloka, the abode of Lord Viṣṇu within this universe, is situated 1,300,000 yojanas from the seven stars. In the planetary system of Dhruvaloka are the planets of the fire-god, Indra, Prajāpati, Kaśyapa and Dharma, all of whom are very respectful to the great devotee Dhruva, who lives on the polestar. Like bulls yoked to a central pivot, all the planetary systems revolve around Dhruvaloka, impelled by eternal time. Those who worship the virāṭ-puruṣa, the universal form of the Lord, conceive of this entire rotating system of planets as an animal known as śiśumāra. This imaginary śiśumāra is another form of the Lord. The head of the śiśumāra form is downward, and its body appears like that of a coiled snake. On the end of its tail is Dhruvaloka, on the body of the tail are Prajāpati, Agni, Indra and Dharma, and on the root of the tail are Dhātā and Vidhātā. On its waist are the seven great sages. The entire body of the śiśumāra faces toward its right and appears like a coil of stars. On the right side of this coil are the fourteen prominent stars from Abhijit to Punarvasu, and on the left side are the fourteen prominent stars from Puṣyā to Uttarāṣāḍhā. The stars known as Punarvasu and Puṣyā are on the right and left hips of the śiśumāra, and the stars known as Ārdrā and Aśleṣā are on the right and left feet of the śiśumāra. Other stars are also fixed on different sides of the Śiśumāra planetary system according to the calculations of Vedic astronomers. To concentrate their minds, yogīs worship the Śiśumāra planetary system, which is technically known as the kuṇḍalini-cakra.

Srimad Bhagavatam V.22 - 19 December 2022

Monday, 19 December 2022 V.22 -  The Sun's glory and his trajectory to illumine our lives.

***

King Parikshit asks how the sun moves in a Pradakshina direction with regard to Meru and Apradaikshina in respect of planets and stars, is this not contradictory?

Sage Shuka explains that what we observe is that all the constellations and planets have their respective movements and the sun's movement need not be synchronised. He gives the analogy of the spinning potter wheel and how ants and such moving on the wheel could very well appear to be moving in the opposite direction.

"Similarly, the signs and constellations, with Sumeru and Dhruvaloka on their right, move with the wheel of time, and the antlike sun and other planets move with them. The sun and planets, however, are seen in different signs and constellations at different times. This indicates that their motion is different from that of the zodiac and the wheel of time itself."

T: It was Bhagavan Narayana alone who manifested as the sun, in response to ardent prayers of the great sages, to benefit all the planets and purify fruitive activities. He divided Himself into twelve parts and created seasonal forms, beginning with spring. In this way, He created the seasons' qualities, such as heat, cold and so on. All four Varnas and Ashramas worship Narayana in the sun with great faith, observing their respective rituals such as agnihotra and similar higher and lower fruitive acts, according to the process of Yoga. In this way, they very easily attain the ultimate goal of life.

Sage Shuka goes on to explain the 12 months, six seasons, 30 day-months, the movement of the moon in the various star constellations in a lunar month, the bright and the dark halves of the lunar month and so on.

"In this way, the moon passes through each constellation of stars in thirty muhurtas [an entire day]. The moon is the source of nectarean coolness that influences the growth of food grains, and therefore the moon is considered the life of all living entities. He is consequently called Jiva, the chief living being within the universe."

"The moon is the predominating deity of everyone’s mind, called Manomaya. He is also called Annamaya because he gives potency to all herbs and plants, and he is called Amritamaya because he is the source of life for all living entities. Everyone is satisfied by the presence of the moon. Therefore the moon is also called Sarvamaya [all-pervading]".

Shuka also describes Budha, Shukra, Mangala and Brihaspati/Guru and their movements. He mentions Shani too. There is a reference to their positive and negative effects on people's lives.

"Situated above Saturn are the seven saintly sages, who are always thinking of the well-being of the inhabitants of the universe. These Sapta Rishis circumambulate the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu, also known as Dhruvaloka, the polestar."

Sunday, 18 December 2022 V.21 -  The Sun's glory and his trajectory to illumine our lives.

***

Sage Shuka says that what he has described as the universe is 4 billion miles big. He then describes the movements of the sun in Antariksha or what we call outer space.

T: The Lord of all the luminous and heat-giving life-giving objects is the Sun, moving in all majesty in Anatariksha. He illumines the three worlds and gives whatever light others like the planets and the moon send to us.

While passing toward the north, toward the south or through the equator, in accordance with the order of Bhagavan, Sun is said to move slowly, swiftly or moderately. According to his movements in rising above, going beneath or passing through the equator — and correspondingly coming in touch with various signs of the zodiac, headed by Makara [Capricorn] — days and nights are short, long or equal to one another.

What follows is a description of the planetary transitions in the northern journey called Uttarayana for the six months when the Sun is above the equator, and the southern journey called Dakshinayana for the six months when the Sun is below the equator. The detailed zodiac signs listed show our ancients' understanding of astronomy very well.

T: The chariot of the Sun has only one wheel, which is known as Samvatsara. The twelve months are calculated to be its twelve spokes, the six seasons are the sections of its rim, and the three chatur-masya periods are its three-sectioned hub. One side of the axle carrying the wheel rests upon the summit of Mount Sumeru, and the other rests upon Manasottara Mountain. Affixed to the outer end of the axle, the wheel continuously rotates on Manasottara Mountain like the wheel of an oil-pressing machine.

The various gods, celestials, and humans offer their prayers to the Sun round the year.

Srimad Bhagavatam V.20 - 17 December 2022

Saturday, 17 December 2022 V.20 -  An elaborate description of different regions described as Lokas and its citizens and the way they worship Bhagavan Maha Vishnu.

***

This is a complex world view of Srimad Bhagavatam. The earth is circular and created as concentric regions with different attributes and intermediate oceans of different types. I have copied this from the translation of Swami Tapasyanandaji.

I have not tried to summarise all the details as I think our modern mind is aligned to the modern post-Megallan geography and we will be hard put to reconcile our ideas with those descriptions, The key takeaway is that the people of those regions worship the Bhagavan.

As a sample I have scanned as OCR the paragraph from Swamiji's translation of one region below.

OCR

Sri Suka said:

34. Beyond that ocean of fresh water is the famous mountain Lokäloka, which stands as an encircling wall between the regions having sunlight and those without it.

35. There is between Lokäloka and the freshwater sea a land equal in extent to the distance between the Mänasottara mountain (forming the outer ring of the Dweepas) and the Meru (the centre). Beyond that is another region, golden and shining like a mirror. Nothing put in it can return, as it will get dissolved. So it is without any living being.

36. As the mountain stands between Loka (seen worlds) and Aloka (worlds that cannot be seen), it gained the name of Lokāloka.

37. This Lokāloka is the boundary mountain placed by the Creator beyond and around as the limit of the three worlds. These three worlds are lighted by the sun's rays. Neither the light of the sun nor that of any luminary up to Dhruva (the pole Star) can go beyond the top of this mountain. It is so high and extensive.

38. This much is the conclusion of wise men about the earth-its disposition, size, characteristics, position, etc. Fifty crores of Yojana is the extent of the earth. The Lokaloka mountain is a fourth of it., i. e. Twelve and a half crores of Yojanas.

39. The Self-born one, the Lord and master of all, has for the stability of the universe placed on the four sides of the Lokāloka mountain four elephants known as the Elephants of the Quarters. They are Rishabha, Pushkarachūda, Vāmana and Aparājita.

40. For encouraging and imparting power to these, and to the guardian lords of the worlds (Lokapalas), who are His glories, the Supreme Lord-the indweller of all and the source and spring of all majesties and powers-reveals all over that mountain His one divine form of Suddhasattva, endowed with excellences like virtue, knowledge, dispassion, lordliness, the eight-fold powers etc., as also with many arms holding a conch, discus, etc. and surrounded by his followers like Vishvaksena. It is only of Suddhasattva, endowed with excellences like virtue, knowledge, dispassion, lordliness, the eight-fold powers etc., as also with many arms holding the conch, discus, etc. and surrounded by his followers like Vishvaksena.

41. It is only by way of sport, for the protection of the worlds and the Jivas inhabiting them, that He has assumed this form with the mysterious power of His Yogamaya.

The Path of Bhakti and the Good Fortune of birth in Bharata Varsha

T: Those born in Bharata Varsha have opportunities through the pursuit of their activities according to the three Gunas and Karmas to attain any kind of birth in any region - heaven, earth or lower regions, and as gods, humans or animals. By seeking the guidance of a Guru and developing Bhakti to Bhagavan, one’s life becomes perfect. Only after several births, when the results of one’s pious activities mature, one gets an opportunity to associate with pure devotees. Then one is able to cut the knot of bondage to ignorance, which have bound one because of varied desire-driven activities. As a result of associating with devotees, one gradually renders service to Lord Vasudeva, who is transcendental, free from attachment to the material world, beyond the mind and words, and independent of everything else. That Bhakti Uoga, devotional service to Lord Vasudeva, is the real path of liberation.

Even the gods are envious of those born in Bharata Varsha! They say, "How wonderful it is for these human beings to have been born in the land of Bharata Varsha! They must have executed pious acts of austerity in the past, or Bhagavan Himself must have been pleased with them. Otherwise, how could they engage in devotional service in so many ways? We gods can only aspire to achieve it, but men in Bharata Varsha are already engaged in this way!"

"A short life in the land of Bharata Varsha is preferable to a life achieved in Brahmaloka for millions and billions of years because even if one is elevated to Brahmaloka, one must return to repeated birth and death. Even in this short life, by fully surrendering unto the lotus feet of the Lord, one attains Vaikunhha Loka, where there is neither anxiety nor repeated birth in a material body."

"Praying to Bhagavan for material gains and worldly joys will surely bring the desired fruits, but that is an endless cycle of want and desire and never gives ultimate fulfilment. Hence Bhagavan expects us to learn from this and pray for liberation, not a better worldly life."

T: Sage Shuka spoke to Parikshit: "In the Kimpurusha Varsha (to be understood as the land of non-human beings like Vanaras), the great devotee Mahaveera Hanuman, along with other attendants, prays fervently to the Lord Sri Rama, Bhagavan incarnate as a human, the elder brother of the noble prince Lakshmana and the loving husband of Devi Sita."

In the Kimpurusha Varsha, celestial singers are constantly reciting the glories of Bhagavan Sri Rama. Hanuman and the chief of Kimpurushas, Arshtishena, listen to the singing with great fervour and pray thus:

"Om! Obeisances to the Supreme Lord, extolled by all, the epitome of greatness among evolved human beings, setting an example of Dharma for all to follow, the touchstone of goodness, the Lord of even Brahma, the greatest human ever, and the Emperor of the world, Lord Sri Rama!"

"As we bow down, we are fully aware that You are pure Knowledge, beyond the three Gunas, the Creative Energy behind the three Gunas,  the Indweller in all, the emobodiment of peace, one perceivable only by the purified intellect and not any ordinary mind, beyond name and form, totally egoless, we surrender to you, Bhagavan Sri Rama!"

"Lord, Your incarnation was not merely to destroy the evil Rakshasas, but also to uplift all human beings by Your example and instruction. Otherwise, how can we explain your sport in which you suffered the terrible pangs of separation from Devi Sita!?"

"You are the inner spirit of the brave seekers who realise You. As such, You are Bhagavan Vasudeva, You have no attachment to anything in the three worlds. Then how do we explain the suffering of separation from a beloved wife, or the extreme distress of forsaking the noble Lakshmana!?" (To set an example of what one goes through willy nilly in this world.)

"Dear Lord, it is clear that You took this incarnation only to teach us forest dwellers what is right and what is wrong.  Your glory is not just because of your high birth, your physical beauty, your eloquent speech, your extreme intelligence or your immense physical form. Otherwise, how would you cultivate us forest dwellers who lacked every single of these attributes!?"

"We cannot see anyone else worshippable, even by gods, celestials, demons or humans other than You! In the form of the human king Sri Rama, You are none other than Bhagavan Sri Hari Himself! How wonderfully appreciative You are of even trivial tasks performed for You by Vanaras and such servants! Indeed, You took everyone dwelling in Ayodhya and so on, back with You, to Vaikuntha at the end of Your incarnation!!!"

***

Bhagavan has taken the form of Nara-Narayana to bless Bharata Varsha also. He pervades the region being invisible to the end of time. He upholds by example Dharma, Jnana, Vairagya, Aishwarya (Power and Glory in the true sense), Conquest of the Senses, Abiding Peace, and all these accomplishments leading up to realisation of Atma or the Supreme. He does this by performing Tapas for all creation's welfare eternally.

Sage Narada extols these attributes of Nara-Narayana while teaching the truths of Sankhya, Yoga and the Pancharatra methods of worship of the Lord to Savarni Manu.  The citizens of Bharata Varsha observe the Dharma of the four Ashramas and Varnas meticulously as they develop Bhakti towards the Lord. They constantly sing His glories.

T: "Om! Obeisances to the great Lord, beyond arrogance, beyond ego, the wealth of the poor, the embodiment of peace, the supreme teacher of the Paramahamsas, the indwelling Lord of those established in the bliss of Atma, Lord Nara Narayana!"

"Prayers to Nara-Narayana, the Supreme Being who is the primal cause and creator of all universes and yet totally free from pride or egoism, embodied in this creation without bodily attachments, the eternal Witness (Onlooker) who is yet unattached and unaffected by what He sees always, He is the Pure Spirit!"

Lord Brahma has said: The Ultimate goal of all Yoga is to merge into You, Oh Lord, with no attachment at all to the body and its world, at the moment of death."

"Man is entrenched here with attachments to home, wife, children and so on. He is so attached to his wealth and belongings that at the moment of death, he is filled with great fear. In fact, even learned scholars find it hard to shrug off these bonds. Therefore, their acquisition of knowledge appears to be doomed to waste!"

"Oh, Lord, therefore grant us by Your grace Devotion. The path of Bhakti is the easiest. By Bhakti we will be able to cut asunder the bonds and attachments here."

Note: These narratives use the simple present tense, reminding us that Puranic Time is circular and that past, present, and future are only constructs of the human mind!

Srimad Bhagavatam V.18- 14 December 2022

Wednesday, 14 December 2022 V.18 -  The incarnations of Bhagavan in different Varshas (regions) and the prayers He received.

***

This chapter summarises the various significant incarnations of Bhagavan Maha Vishnu in different epochs and in different regions (Varshas). His devotees ardently prayed to Him in each instance, realising how He had come to save them.

***
In Bhardrashrava Varsha, King Bhadrashrava prays to Lord Hayagriva, the incarnation of Bhagavan thus:

भद्रश्रवस ऊचु:
ॐ नमो भगवते धर्मायात्मविशोधनाय नम इति ॥
T:  "We offer our respectful obeisances to Bhagavan, the reservoir of all Dharma! In His form of Hayagriva retrieved the Vedas and returned them to Lord Brahma!"

Prahlada, the devotee, prayed ardently to the worderful incarnation of Lord Narasimha in Hari Varsha:

ॐ नमो भगवते नरसिंहाय नमस्तेजस्तेजसे आविराविर्भव वज्रनख वज्रदंष्ट्र कर्माशयान् रन्धय रन्धय तमो ग्रस ग्रस ॐ स्वाहा । अभयमभयमात्मनि भूयिष्ठा ॐ क्ष्रौम् ॥
T: My prayers to Lord Narasimha, the source of all power! O my Lord who possess nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demonlike desires for fruitive activity in this material world! Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in this material world. May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities attain Bhakti!"

In Ketumala Varsha, Bhagavan comes as Kamadeva, Pradyuma, and attracts everyone irresistibly, including Devi Sri Lakshmi. They all pray to Him as the supreme "husband" and protector.

In Ramyaka Varsha,  Bhagavan comes and saves all life as Matsya, receiving the prayer of Vaivasvata Manu.

In Hiranmaya Varsha, Bhagavan comes as Kurma, the giant tortoise. Aryama, the chief, prays:

ॐ नमो भगवते अकूपाराय सर्वसत्त्वगुणविशेषणायानुपलक्षितस्थानाय नमो वर्ष्मणे नमो भूम्ने नमो नमोऽवस्थानाय नमस्ते ॥
T: "You, who have assumed the form of a tortoise, are the reservoir of all transcendental qualities, and being entirely untinged by matter, You are perfectly situated in pure goodness. You move here and there in the water, but no one can discern Your position. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto You. Because of Your transcendental position, You are not limited by past, present and future. You are present everywhere as the shelter of all things, and therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto You again and again."

In the incarnation as the Boar, Bhagavan is prayed to thus by Earth and everyone else:

ॐ नमो भगवते मन्त्रतत्त्वलिङ्गाय यज्ञक्रतवे महाध्वरावयवाय महापुरुषाय नम: कर्मशुक्लाय त्रियुगाय नमस्ते ॥
T: "Oh Lord, with your gigantic form, we know you are the Yajna, the Yajna enjoyer, and the one who pervades all in all the three Yugas!  My Lord, as the original boar within this universe, You fought and killed the great demon Hiranyaksha. Then You lifted me from the Garbhodaka Ocean on the end of Your tusk, exactly as a sporting elephant plucks a lotus flower from the water. I bow down before You."

Srimad Bhagavatam V.17 - 13 December 2022

Tuesday, 13 December 2022 V.17 -  The description of great rivers like Alakananda (Ganga) and the prayer of Lord Shiva to Bhagavan Sankarshana.

***
Sage Shuka launches into a brief narrative of what happened when Bhagavan Maha Vishnu appeared as Vamana at the Yajna of King Bali. When Bali became complacent and offered three foot-measures of land to the midget Brahmin boy, somewhat amused by the "trivial" request, the "Trivial" became the "Trivikrama" or the Infinitely huge Bhagavan whose three foot-measures spanned all creation.

Bhagavan extended His left foot to the top of the universe and pierced a hole in its covering with the nail of His big toe. Through the hole, the pure water of the Primordial Ocean entered this universe as the river Ganga. Known as Vishnupadi,  since she first washed the Lord's feet before descent, she acquired a pinkish hue (from His coloured nails) and readily sanctified everyone touched by her. Later she received other names like Bhagirathi and Jahnavi. Her final destination would be Dhruva Loka. Dhruva worships the Ganga to this very day and accepts that water on his head with great devotion. He is drenched then in ecstatic devotion to the Bhagavan.

The Saptarshis, the seven great sages who reside below Dhurva Loka, daily wet their matted locks with the holy Ganga as the crown jewel of their spiritual attainment. They hold Bhakti as the summum bonum.

After traversing through Chandra Loka, Ganga enters the top of Mount Meru in Brahma's earthly creation.

She then distributes herself into four major rivers, all traversing the earth to finally merge in the oceans.

This chapter has many descriptions of the four rivers -  Sita, Alakananda, Chakshu and Bhadra. I shall confine myself here to the description of the river Alakananda.

T: Thus, too, is the holy river Alakananda, flowing southward and traversing through Brahmapuri and several mountain tops, descending with force on Hemakuta (literally golden peak) and Himakuta (snow peak). She then bathes and suffuses the land called Bharata Varsha.  She finally merges in the salty ocean of the south. Persons who come to bathe in this river are fortunate. The merit they gain with that holy bath is comparable fully but with a level of difficulty far less than the great effort needed to perform several Ashwamedha Yajnas and Rajasuya Yajnas!

Many other rivers, both big and small, flow from the top of Mount Meru. These rivers are like daughters of the mountain.  They flow to the various tracts of land in hundreds of branches.

Bharata Varsha, among the nine regions (Varshas), is the land of Karma where man makes efforts and secures the results in the here and hereafter, according to his Karma. The other regions are heavenly places with great pleasures and longevity. There are divine gardens of plenty and affording heavenly fauna and flora there.

Showing mercy on His devotees in each of these nine regions, Bhagavan Narayana expands Himself in His fourfold manifestations of Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha, to accept the offerings and prayers of His devotees.

One of those Varshas, called Ilavarta or Ila Vrsha (इलावर्त) is the abode of Lord Shiva. There, he is the only male,  living with his consort Parvati. All others there are women who serve the Lord. No men dare trespass as they will then become women.

Lord Shiva knows that Sankarshana, representing the Tamasic Guna, is the source of his own manifestation as Shiva. So he worships Him ardently. Here is Shiva's prayer:

श्रीभगवानुवाच
ॐ नमो भगवते महापुरुषाय सर्वगुणसङ्ख्यानायानन्तायाव्यक्ताय नम इति ॥
भजे भजन्यारणपादपङ्कजंभगस्य कृत्‍स्‍नस्य परं परायणम् । भक्तेष्वलं भावितभूतभावनंभवापहं त्वा भवभावमीश्वरम् ॥
T: Lord Shiva says, "Oh Bhagavan! Obeisances. You are the Great Spirit, endowed with all glories, limitless and beyond manifestation too. Your feet are most worshippable, and the refuge of all creation.  You satisfy by manifesting Yourself in various forms. Oh, my Lord, You deliver Your devotees from the clutches of material existence."

"The Lord is beyond attractions and repulsions that we feel towards objects of His creation. Those who are provoked into anger receive the fruits of such feelings. The Lord is beyond temptation even when women touch His feet with great emotion (for example, the wives of the Kaliya serpent). As Sankarshana, Adi Shesha, You hold upon Your thousand hoods all creation, feeling the burden light like little mustard seeds!"

"From You, oh Lord, Brahma was created. His nature is Rajas. I was created by Brahma, with the nature of Tamas, and am called Rudra. We all function and create the worlds like puppets on a string controlled by You, Oh Lord!"

T: Your Maya, oh, Lord, binds us all in the cycle of Gunas and Karmas! Therefore, without Your grace, oh, Lord, we know not how to get out of this cycle! I, therefore, bow down to You as the source of Creation and Dissolution, too!"

***
