Sri Mukundamala -4

Translation: Oh, Lord Hari! I worship Your two feet not to negate this world of dualities through liberation: nor for avoiding my being dipped in the deadly boiling oil cauldrons in hell; nor indeed to enjoy the company of lissome heavenly damsels; but I pray so that I shall enshrine You in the mansion of my heart and remember You always!
Notes: The devotee, Kulaśekhara, asks not for freedom from the miseries of this dualistic world. He does not want to avoid hellish punishment. He does not also covet the company of heavenly women of pleasure. He simply wants, birth after birth, to enshrine and cherish the Lord in his heart. This shows the purity of his mind. Such a devotee is sure to receive the Lord's grace!

Sri Mukundamala -3

Translation: Oh, Mukunda! Touching down with my forehead, I beg of You, exclusively, this boon alone- By Your compassion, may I have undistracted remembrance of Your lotus feet, constantly, and birth after birth!
Notes: The devotee, Kulaśekhara, now prays to Mukunda. What is his prayer? Not worldly gain. Not lordship over the world of men and matter. Not even liberation! In fact, he prays exclusively, plaintively, for only the constant remembrance of the Lord's lotus feet in utter devotion. For, a devotee knows deep within that constant immersion in the Love of the Lord exceeds even Mukti as it is but an empty state when shorn of the Love of God.  The word Avismṛti has to be understood as the freedom from worldly thoughts and attachments which detract one from constant immersion in the remembrance of the Lord. As Kabir says, "What is the use of constantly uttering the Lord's name on your lips, turning the rosary beads, when the mind is busy wandering all over the marketplace?" The poet stresses that he does not mind being born again and again in Samsāra, as long as he has by Mukunda's grace the constant, undistracted, remembrance of the Lord's lotus feet.

ŚrīGuruvāyūrappan

Translation: All glory and victory to this Lord, joy-giving son of Devakī, Kṛṣṇa, the beacon light of the Vṛṣṇī clan, the Dark One resembling rain-bearing clouds, the One with tender limbs, the One who unburdened the Earth of evil, the Giver of liberation, Mukunda!
Notes: The declamation, "Glory and Victory to the Lord", is more an expression of devotion than a prayer for His victory when He is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent. It is a prayer.
Swami-ji quotes from Adi Śaṅkara extensively to enumerate the glories of Śrī MahāViṣṇu or Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa extolled in this stanza.
Deva is the Supreme Lord, saviour of the good and punisher of the wicked, the Eternal One.
Devakī-Nandana refers to the genesis of Kṛṣṇa, how He fulfilled her wish to be born to her.
Kṛṣṇa's glories fill thousands of pages of our scriptures, the Complete Revelation of Godhood, who at every moment gave joy, saved the good, punished the evil, protected the weak, diplomatically managed every royal situation, strategised and brought about spectacular outcomes, displayed miraculous power, knowledge, and acts of infinite love, making Him the Greatest idea of what God is and can be always. More than anything else, he is ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR PRAYER, like ŚrīGuruvāyūrappan!
The icon of the Vṛṣṇī clan was an exemplar, who brought out the best among all those royals.
Dark and handsome, he was tender-limbed for the loving Gopis. He also unburdened the Earth of the evil rulers who were pompous, cruel and self-seeking, and He did not spare even the Yadavas in the end for their misuse of power!

Sri Mukundamala -1

ŚrīRaṅganāthaSvāmī

Kulaśekhara Āḷvār

Translation: Oh, Mukunda! Kindly make me chant every moment and step of my life Your glories- The Beloved Consort of ŚrīLakṣmī, The Boon-giver, The supremely Kind One, The One who loves Devotees, The One who loots and destroys worldly miseries, My own Lord, The One reclining on the Thousand-hooded Adiśeṣa, The One who permeates all Existence!

Notes: The very first shloka is a power-packed prayer to the One who grants LIberation. The long list of epithets that Kulaśekhara pleads with the Lord to instil on his tongue to be chanted every moment and step is significant!
  1. The Beloved Consort of ŚrīLakṣmī - The word  Śrī includes all beauty, wealth, glory, munificence, grace and effulgence. When the Lord is Her Consort, we can understand His glories! So this is the true Bhagavān, Iśvara, who lacks nothing. No wonder the intelligent devotee prays to such a Lord! In fact, Swami Chinmayananda is said to have replied, when questioned how the funds would come for all his big projects, "When Narayana is encased in my heart, Lakshmi has to follow and come in!"
  2. The Boon-giver - Having all attributes is not enough if the Lord does not give. So pray to the giver, not busy self-aggrandising!
  3. The Supremely Kind One - Giving is always rooted in kindness. Pray to the Epitome of Kindness!
  4. The One who loves Devotees - The giving by the Lord is out of infinite, unconditional, eternal Love for the devotees, not in a momentary excitement.
  5. The One who loots and destroys worldly miseries - What does the best devotee pray for, when he already has the Lord's Love and Grace? Liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Remember, Mukunda is the one who liberates.
  6.  My own Lord - The devotee is feeling extremely intimate and close to the Lord. It is not a tentative prayer to a distant source of power but to one's own.
  7. The One reclining on the Thousand-hooded Ādiśeṣa - this pithy allusion shows that to be a Lord, He should have mastered the forces that hold up the world and can terrorise it with poison. Even when He is reclining on Adiśeṣa, He remains smiling and at peace. No agitation! This is a practical demonstration of who is the real boss.
  8. The One who permeates all Existence - The Lord is not aloof. This world is not a fleeting, illusory, mischievous trick. It is His own body and being, and we can see Divinity everywhere, for the Lord is sporting in this universe! This is possible to see as long as we are not stuck in our petty demands and egos.
So when Kulaśekhara prays that the Lord should make him chant these names in every moment and at every step, he is showing us what an exalted devotee he is. He is not asking for wealth, health, name, fame, family and longevity. He is praying that he should be in prayer always, dwelling with body mind and soul in the Lord. This is surely the recipe for Mukti - called Jīvanmukti.

Bhagavān assures us in the SrimadBhagavadgītā:
अनन्यचेताः सततं यो मां स्मरति नित्यशः । तस्याहं सुलभः पार्थ नित्ययुक्तस्य योगिनः ॥ ८-१४॥
Oh, Arjuna, for the one who is singleminded, and constantly remembers Me. I am easily attainable; that devotee is always immersed in me and a true Yogi.
Those who single-mindedly pray to Me and worship Me shall find that all the affairs in the here and the hereafter of those constantly in worshipful Yoga are taken care of Me.

Sri Mukundamala - Introduction

(Cover photo of the ISKCON book )

Today, I am starting a new series of blogs on the famous ŚrīMukundamālāstotram by Rājā Kulaśekhara Ālvār of the 9th century CE. I was lucky to learn this as a young boy and heard it recited often.
I am basing my notes on the wonderful lectures given by Swāmī Harṣānanda of Śrī Rāmakṛṣṇa Maṭh and also the book by Śrīla Prabhupāda and his disciples. The links are given to both here.

I quote from the back cover of the ISKCON book:
The saintly king Kulasekhara lived more than a millennium ago in India, yet his Mukunda-mala-stotra speaks to us today with the fresh voice of eternal truth. It is the voice of a realized soul beseeching the Lord — and us — with the utmost sincerity. Here is how he calls us to our salvation: O people, please hear of this treatment for the disease of birth and death! It is the name of Kṛṣṇa. Recommended by expert yogis steeped in wisdom — such as Yājñavalkya — this boundless, eternal inner light is the best medicine, for when drunk, it bestows complete and final liberation. Just drink it.
The first part of the Mukunda-mala-stotra contains the commentary of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, recognized by scholars and spiritual leaders worldwide as the most distinguished teacher of Indian culture and philosophy of the modern age, the latter part contains commentary by Satsvarupa dasa Goswami, one of Srila Prabhupada’s senior disciples and the author of more than two dozen books on devotional life.
*****

The inspiration for this series also comes from the Premāvatāra Bhagavān "Sri Sathya Sai Baba". After the Mere Sai TV serial, the last few months have been for me full of videos and stories about Baba from Sri. Aravind Balasubramanya and others. The amazing thing for me, after studying the Bhagavadgītā, Rāmāyaṇam and Śrīmadbhāgavatam, is how Baba or Swami is indeed living the divine sport we read about, touching in myriad seen and unseen ways thousands of devotees who live to tell his stories so eloquently! This no doubt puts me in a more devotional mood, a great opportunity that is for studying the ŚrīMukundamālāstotram. This photo of Baba shows him manifesting a gold Kṛṣṇa statue in a few minutes from the sands of the Arabian sea near Dwaraka, for the Rajmata of Jamnagar. This story can be read from several accounts on the Internet.
*****
The introductory verse of the text:
घुष्यते यस्य नगरे रङ्गयात्रा दिने दिने ।
तमहं शिरसा वन्दे राजानं कुलशेखरम् ॥
Translation: I bow down to that king by the name of Kulaśekhara in whose capital every day the Lord Raṅganātha's ceremonial procession Yātrā is announced and celebrated.

Notes:
Swami-ji (=Swāmī Harṣānanda) describes how human beings are never satisfied with material welfare. Comforts and acquisitions in this world are important but the lasting bliss of the Supreme is felt in an inner urge to seek it and it can be found only in The path to this Supreme Bliss is through Divine Love which is also called भक्ति. Swami (=Sai Baba) calls everyone Premasvarūpis. One who has experienced any love, even worldly love, has an inkling of Bhakti. This is the essence of worship of Bhagavān whose divine attributes give ready material for extolling Him and praying for His grace. This is the essence of ŚrīMukundamālāstotram by Rājā Kulaśekhara Ālvār of the 9th century CE.  This Chera king is celebrated for his devotional works Perumal Thirumoli and ŚrīMukundamālāstotram. Thousand pillared halls named after him can be seen in both Srirangam and Thirvananthapuram temples.

Kulaśekhara was one of the twelve Ālvārs who laid the foundation for divine love for Bhagavān Mukunda. Mukunda is explained as the "Lord who grants liberation." Liberation here means freedom from worldly bonds as well as the exhilarating launch into the world of Divine Love and Divine Bliss. Indeed the two terms are interchangeable if you think for a moment.  Swami-ji stresses how worship of the Lord with form as Śrī Kṛṣṇa or Śrī Rāma or any one of the Avatāras of Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa or Viṣṇu, or for that matter, any form of any Deity as the Supreme Being is equally efficacious as the deepest meditation and experience of the formless Brahman.

If we do believe there is a Supreme Being= Paramātmā who is the Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer of all material existence and experience, we have to believe He or She has the ability to take any form to be loved and worshipped, by the Ātmā in us in the process of developing devotion to the Paramātmā! All religions proclaim Love is God and the path to Godhood is Divine Love. Those who think Nirguṇa or Saguṇa Brahman is superior or inferior are foolish indeed as they have not understood Paramātmā!
