Srimad Bhagavatam X b.60 Part A - 31 May 2023


॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

31 May 2023, Wednesday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.60 Part A-  A most interesting dialogue between Devi Rukmini and Sri Krishan covering a gamut of lessons for us! Done in two parts. This is Part A.

श्रीशुक उवाच
कर्हिचित्सुखमासीनं स्वतल्पस्थं जगद्गुरुम् । पतिं पर्यचरद्भैष्मी व्यजनेन सखीजनैः ॥
यस्त्वेतल्लीलया विश्वं सृजत्यत्त्यवतीश्वरः । स हि जातः स्वसेतूनां गोपीथाय यदुष्वजः ॥

T: Sage Shuka narrated: On one occasion, Queen Rukmini was seated on her inner chamber couch with Bhagavan Sri Krishna, surrounded by servants. Rukimi was lovingly fanning her beloved husband, who is indeed by His Leela the creator, devourer and protector at the same time of this universe! He had incarnated as Sri Krishna to protect the Yadus.  

Sage Shuka describes the most evocative scene of connubial bliss enjoyed by Rukmini and Sri Krishna. 

Rukmini's palace was magnificent, boasting a canopy hung with brilliant strings of pearls, as well as effulgent jewels shining like lamps. Garlands of jasmine and other flowers hung here and there, attracting swarms of humming bees, and the spotless rays of the moon shone through the holes carried the mood of a Parijata garden into the room. There the Queen served her husband, the Supreme Lord of all the worlds, as He reclined upon an opulent pillow on her bed, which was as soft and white as the foam of milk. Rukmini took the Yak-hair fan from her maid's hand and fanned her beloved Sri Krishna holding its bejewelled handle. Her bracelets tinkled from her effort, and she looked resplendent as she stood fanning her lord. Her jewelled ankle-bells tinkled occasionally, and her necklace glittered, reddened by the vermilion smeared on her breasts, which were covered by the end of her sari. On her waist, she wore a priceless belt.

Sri Krishna was delighted that Devi Lakshmi had taken the form of Rukmini and was with him. Her charming face was adorned with curling hair, earrings, and a locket on her neck, and poured out the nectar of her bright, happy smile. 

The Lord then spoke to her as follows.
"My dear princess, you were sought after by many kings powerful like the guardians of the quarters. They had abundant political influence, wealth, beauty, generosity and physical strength. Your brother and father wanted you to choose from them. Why did you reject the King of Cedi and all those other suitors, who stood before you, hopelessly in love with you? Why, instead, did you choose us, who are not at all your equal?"

"My dear Rukmini, you know how we built our safe haven in the sea as we were afraid of their attacks. We even gave up Mathura's royal throne. "

"You well know how it is. Women who choose men of unpredictable nature defying society's norms are known to suffer much.  We have no material possessions, and we are dear to only those similarly impoverished. Indeed, Oh slender one, the wealthy hardly ever worship me."

ययोरात्मसमं वित्तं जन्मैश्वर्याकृतिर्भवः । तयोर्विवाहो मैत्री च नोत्तमाधमयोः क्वचित् ॥ 
T: "Marriage and friendship are proper between two people who are equals in terms of their wealth, birth, influence, physical appearance and capacity for good progeny, but never between a superior and an inferior. Oh, Princess of Vidarbha, I am afraid that not being farsighted, you didn’t realise this, and therefore you chose me as your husband, even though we have no good qualities, simply by listening to glowing storuies about us narrated by deluded beggars!"

 "The prudent thing for you, therefore, is to take a more suitable husband, a first-class man of the royal order who can help you achieve everything you want, both in this life and the next. Shishupala, Dantavaktra, Jarasandha, Rukmi, all hate me."

तेषां वीर्यमदान्धानां दृप्तानां स्मयनुत्तये ।आनीतासि मया भद्रे तेजोऽपहरतासताम् ॥ 
T: "I must tell you that I came and carried you away only to dispel the arrogance of those kings. My good woman, they were blinded by the intoxication of power. My purpose was to curb the strength of the wicked."

उदासीना वयं नूनं न स्त्र्यपत्यार्थकामुकाः । आत्मलब्ध्याऽऽस्महे पूर्णा गेहयोर्ज्योतिरक्रियाः ॥  
T: The important thing to know is that our nature is such that we care nothing for wives, children and wealth and the pleasures of a comfortable life with family and fortune. On the other hand, we are alwayscontented within ourselves, and do not work for enriching the physical body and material home. We are akin to light, that gets attached to nothing, and stays a witness always!"

 

Rukmini's apple cart seemed to topple instantly. her sangfroid was shattered by the Lord's uncaring words and advice that she go and take a new and better husband! Her fan slipped down, she also fainted and collapsed in utter dismay. Sri Krishna knew she had not understood his humour. He knew how much she loved him. He lifted her and embraced her most lovingly now. "My dearest, Rukmini, don't take my words seriously! I only joked!" Wiping her tears, caressing her lovely face, Sri Krishna continued, 'My dearest, I only wanted to push you to respond to these words, and looked forward to what you would say!" " Please, please, don't be cross, Rukmini! You know we householders like to joke like this at home with our near and dear ones!"

Rukmini quickly composed herself, and smiling, she responded. That is so wonderful we should wait till tomorrow to read it!

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.59 - 30 May 2023



॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

30 May 2023, Tuesday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.59 -  Sri Krishna kills Bhauma Narakasura, and marries all the sixteen thousand one hundred princesses held in captivity by the demon, who have nowhere else to go.
He keeps everyone happy as only he can.

Sage Shuka satisfies Parikshit's curiosity by narrating how Bhagavan destroyed the evil Narakasura. The demon was also called Bhauma as he had been born to Goddess Earth when she had been abducted by Hiranyaksha. Naraka, as we shall call him henceforth, was evil. He stole Aditi Devi's divine earrings, and Lord Varuna's sacred umbrella, and took away the Mani Parvata, the peak of Meru, which was the sporting ground of the gods. He established himself in the fort of Pragjyotishapura, defended by rings of forts made up of, first, a crater-like outermost ring of hills, then a ring of sharp weapons, then a ring of fire, then a big moat of water, and then a wind curtain that would blow any intruder away. Finally, the innermost ring was a complex maze of metal chains that would entrap anyone. This was set up by Mura, another Asura in Naraka's service. 

Bhagavan heard from Indra who came and pleaded that Bhagavan should retrieve the stolen items from Naraka and end his despotism. Sri Krishna summoned Garuda, and taking the spirited Satyabhama along, he went to attack Naraka.

The fortifications were stupendous but easy for Bhagavan to destroy one by one. First, he used his Gada to smash the rocks. Then he used his divine bow to rain arrows that broke down the weaponry. Then he used his Chakra to destroy the fire, water and wind curtains. Then he used his Nandaki sword to slash down all the chains Mura had erected. 

At this juncture, hearing the blowing of Bhagavan's divine conch which shattered the hearts of Asuras in Pragjyorisha, Mura discovered how Bhagavan had broken down all their defences. 

Mura was a five-headed demon who was hiding in the water ring. He now came and attacked Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Mura shone like the final inferno that destroys the world as he attacked Garuda with a Trident. His roar emanating from five mouths as he launched it shattered the three worlds with its sonic boom.  

Sri Hari simply shattered that Trident midway before it came near Garuda. He then shot five arrows to Mura's five mouths at once. Mura launched his club. The Lord's own Kaumodiki Gada shattered it to smithereens. Mura now launched himself at Bhagavan, who simply cut of all his five heads with the Chakra. Mura's fall was like that of a mountain struck down by Indra's Vajra as he sank into the waters. 

Mura's seven sons now came to avenge his death. With all their weapons, their simultaneous attack on Bhagavan was null and void as their weapons were all smashed to bits. Naraka saw how all these seven as well as his commander Pitha were sent to Yama's abode in quick time by Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Naraka now came out of his citadel mounted on a divine elephant captured from the Milky Ocean. 

द‍ृष्ट्वा सभार्यं गरुडोपरि स्थितं सूर्योपरिष्टात् सतडिद् घनं यथा ।
कृष्णं स तस्मै व्यसृजच्छतघ्नीं योधाश्च सर्वे युगपच्च विव्यधु: ॥
T: Naraka saw Sri Krishna, seated on Garuda along with his queen Satyabhama, and thought the sight looked like a huge rain cloud hovering over the sun with streaked lightning! (Sri Krishna was the raincloud, Satyabhama lightning, and Garuda was the sun). He attacked Sri Krishna and was followed by his soldiers.

Sri Krishna shot a torrent of arrows with ornate feathers that shattered at once these soldiers, their weapons and horses and elephants in short order. This was done by Bhagavan shooting three arrows each at every weapon launched, and Garuda with his mighty wings smashing to a fleshy mass the elephants and horses. The survivors now ran back into the city,  a stranded Naraka stood alone to face Sri Hari,

द‍ृष्ट्वा विद्रावितं सैन्यं गरुडेनार्दितं स्वकं । तं भौम: प्राहरच्छक्त्या वज्र: प्रतिहतो यत: । 
नाकम्पत तया विद्धो मालाहत इव द्विप: ॥
T: Naraka saw his army smashed by Garuda. He then launched his Shakti Ayudha which had countered even Indra's Vajra before, at Garuda. But Garuda stood unaffected like an elephant stands unconcerned when someone throws a garland around his neck!

Now, in a last, desperate move, Naraka attacked Sri Krishna with his Trident. But even before he made any progress with it, Sri Krishna cut off his head with the Sudarshana Chakra and ended the menace of this Asura, while he was being urged to do so by Satyabhama seated alongside on Garuda.

The death of Naraka was celebrated in the three worlds by people bathing, wearing their best clothes, lighting lamps, distributing sweets, and exchanging gifts to herald the new era of happy freedom. This is called Deepaavali

Amidst exclamations of congratulations by Rishis and Devas, Bhumi Devi appeared in front of Sri Hari, and returned all the divine items stolen before by Naraka viz, Aditi's Kundalas, Varuna's Chattra, and Meru's Mani peak. She also presented the Lord the Vaijayanti Mala.

नमो भगवते तुभ्यं वासुदेवाय विष्णवे । पुरुषायादिबीजाय पूर्णबोधाय ते नम: ॥ 
T: Bhumi prayed: " I bow down to You, Bhagavan Vasudeva, Adi Purusha, Maha Vishnu and the embodiment of Eternal Wisdom."

She then appealed to Sri Krishna to show compassion to Naraka's son (i.e. her grandson) who stood in surrender. Sri Krishna compassionately blessed him to get wisdom and then entered the city.

In the city, Sri Krishna found sixteen thousand one hundred princesses held captive by Naraka after he had killed their kith and kin! All the princesses were in the most wretched condition with no one to look after them. Understanding their instinctive love and surrender to him, Sri Krishna accepted them as his own and had them released and conveyed in a royal procession with huge treasures retrieved from Pargjyotishapura. They all arrived ahead of Sri Krishna and Satyabhama in Dwaraka.

Sri Krishna now went on Garuda with Satyabhama to Indra's abode and was duly received with worship by Indra and his wife. Sri Krishna restored all the stolen property like Aditi's Kundalas. Then, realising Satyabhama's desire, Sri Krishna uprooted a Parijata tree and placed it on Garuda to be taken to her palace in Dwaraka. Strangely, this upset Indra who now attacked Sri Krishna. It was a matter of a little struggle in which Sri Krishna defeated Indra and his godly army and brought Satyabhama and the Parijata to Dwaraka.

सिद्धार्थ एतेन विगृह्यते महानहो सुराणां च तमो धिगाढ्यताम् 
T: Sage Shuka remarks, " Is it not amazing that the Lord, infallible and always successful in His actions, is sometimes opposed even by the gods who out of their dense ignorance fail to see His divine will!?" 

Sri Krishna arrived in Dwaraka to great festivities. He established a palace for each of the new queens- all 16,100 of them, and married them formally. Sage Shuka says that by his divine will, Bhagavan Sri Krishna multiplied himself and played the perfect loving husband and ideal householder with each of those wives in her respective palace, leaving no stone unturned to make his huge army of queens individually happy and fulfilled with no grievance at all!

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.58 - 29 May 2023


॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

29 May 2023, Monday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.58 -  Sri Krishna helps the Pandavas build a great capital and acquire divine weapons. Sri Krishna weds many princesses eager to marry him.

Sri Krishna visited the Pandavas in Indraprastha. They had survived the attempt on their lives by Kauravas who housed them and then set fire to it, named Lakshagriha (a building built cleverly with lac to burn down quickly). They had then spent time incognito. Then they had attended the Swayamvara of Draupadi where Arjuna unravelled the Matysayantra with his arrow and won her hand, much to the anger of Kauravas. Finally Kunti made Draupadi accept all five Pandavas as her husbands. They had now arrived in Hastinapura to the delight of its citizens and disquiet among the Kauravas. They had been given a place to build their palace and it became Indraprastha after they set it up with heavenly attractions.

परिष्वज्याच्युतं वीरा अङ्गसङ्गहतैनस: ।
सानुरागस्मितं वक्त्रं वीक्ष्य तस्य मुदं ययु: ॥
T: The heroic Pandavas embraced Sri Krishna and felt cleansed by the very contact with his divine person. They were most delighted just beholding the smiling Lord. Sri Krishna bowed to Yudhishthira and Bhima, embraced Arjuna and blessed the twin brothers Nakula Sahadeva. 

Sri Krishna gave so much solace to Kunti and the Pandavas that he decided to spend the four months of monsoon with them. He went on hunting trips with Arjuna.

After making Arjuna propitiate Agni in Khandava Dahana and get sacred weapons from him (a divine bow, four white horses, inexhaustible quivers and body armour), Sri Krishna also arranged with Vishwa Karma, the celestial architect, to build a great capital in Indraprastha. Then in Khandava Dahana, the Asura Mayaa was released by Arjuna and out of gratitude he created a magical palace for the Pandavas. Shuka narrates how Duryodhana became an object of ridicule while visiting this palace which paved the way for Pandavas' exile through some twists.

Once, Arjuna saw a beautiful maiden performing Tapas on the bank of Yamuna. When he approached her to ask what she was doing there, she replied politely that she was Kalindi, daughter of Surya. She dwelt in her palace in the Yamuna and was performing Tapas to secure Bhagavan Maha Vishnu Himself, incarnated now as Sri Krishna, for her husband. Arjuna conveyed this to Sri Krishna who smilingly accepted her. After Sri Krishna returned to Dwaraka with his retinue, accompanied by Arjuna and the maiden Kalindi, he married her formally amidst great festivities. 

Sri Krishna also wedded Mitravinda of Avanti, a princess whose brothers Vindya and Anuvindya who were loyal to Duryodhana and hated Sri Krishna. He simply abducted her like he did Rukmini, since she also was insistent on having him alone as her husband. 

Later Sri Krishna went to the kingdom of a famous king Nagnajit of Koshala. His daughter Satya wanted very much to wed Sri Krishna. When Sri Krishna arrived, Nagnajit received him with great respect. He prayed to Sri Krishna:
यत्पादपङ्कजरज: शिरसा बिभर्ति श्रीरब्जज: सगिरिश: सहलोकपालै: ।
लीलातनु: स्वकृतसेतुपरीप्सया य: कालेऽदधत्स भगवान् मम केन तुष्येत् ॥
T: "Oh, Bhagavan, You the dust of whose lotus feet are placed as sacred on their heads by Devi Lakshmi, Brahma and Shiva, by all other guardians of the quarters, who incarnates Himself in various forms from time to time out of His Leela for the restoration of the world's Dharmic order, in what way, Oh Lord, can I serve You and what can I, a trivial king, offer You as a suitable gift!?"

श्रीभगवानुवाच
नरेन्द्र याच्ञा कविभिर्विगर्हिता राजन्यबन्धोर्निजधर्मवर्तिन: ।
तथापि याचे तव सौहृदेच्छया कन्यां त्वदीयां न हि शुल्कदा वयम् ॥
T: Sri Krishna replied: "Dear King! You're most generous. But the wise state that royals and Kshatriyas should not demean themselves by asking for gifts. Therefore I need no gift. But I do request you to give your daughter Satya in marriage to me, but sorry, I can give no dowry!" 

Both Nagnajit and Satya were most keen that Sri Krishna wed Satya. But the king had set up a a tough hurdle for any prince aspiring for her hand. So he said to Sri Krishna:
सप्तैते गोवृषा वीर दुर्दान्ता दुरवग्रहा: । एतैर्भग्ना: सुबहवो भिन्नगात्रा नृपात्मजा: ॥
यदिमे निगृहीता: स्युस्त्वयैव यदुनन्दन । वरो भवानभिमतो दुहितुर्मे श्रिय:पते ॥
T: "Oh Consort of Devi Lakshmi, of course no dowry is expected at all. But there is a test of bravery set as a precondition. I have seven extremely violent bulls with sharp horns. They should all be tamed and yoked by the suitor to win Satya's hand. I must warn you these bulls hate the smell of princes and many suitors have broken limbs and torn their bodies after going near these bulls."

एवं समयमाकर्ण्य बद्ध्वा परिकरं प्रभु: । आत्मानं सप्तधा कृत्वा न्यगृह्णाल्ल‍ीलयैव तान् ॥
बद्ध्वा तान् दामभि: शौरिर्भग्नदर्पान् हतौजस: । व्यकर्षल्ल‍ीलया बद्धान् बालो दारुमयान् यथा ॥
T: Sri Krishna hearing about the qualifying test, simply girded up his loins. He multiplied himself into seven Sri Krishnas. In a jiffy, he had tied a stout rope around every bull's neck. He then pierced their nasal septa and threaded the rope as ia done to yoke bulls. Having got them under his control with astonishing ease, he virtually played with the seven bulls as if they were wooden bulls - toy figures. 

The rival kings were not pleased with Sri Krishna's success. They attacked his post wedding procession with Satya. Arjuna with his mighty Gandiva made short work of their challenge. 

After wedding Satya, Sri Krishna also wed Lakshmana another eager princess (by abducting her as he did Rukmini), and Bhadra, another princess, sister of Santardana. 

अन्याश्चैवंविधा भार्या: कृष्णस्यासन् सहस्रश: । भौमं हत्वा तन्निरोधादाहृताश्चारुदर्शना: ॥
T: Sage Shuka concludes the chapter by saying that these were not the only brides of Sri Krishna. He freed thousands of princesses abducted and held in captivity by King Bhauma and made all of them his wives. 

Post-script
Sri Krishna is often the subject of jokes among neo-liberals who say, "How can you worship a womaniser?" 

Indeed, Srimad Bhagavatam states plainly how women were besotted with Sri Krishna and he married many princesses. He even built palaces for all of them, in thousands. He played the living husband to each of them, multiplying himself. 

Does it make Sri Krishna a womaniser? 

1. Sri Krishna is the Leela Manusha Vigrahah - the epitome of the complete and supreme man born of divinity in eternal sportiness. That means he appeared to all as a perfect, most desirable, hero. Naturally, Nature had its effect on the thousands of women who came into his life. 
2. Sri Krishna is called Prema-avatara. The incarnation of Love. Hence he was perfectly happy to play the ideal lover. 

3. Sri Krishna is called Yogeshwara. The supreme master or God of Yoga. That means all his senses, his body and mind were under his perfect control. There was no question of profligacy,  intemperance, exploitation of women and the unavoudable aftermath in terms of retribution, repentance, sin and guilt. No woman ever took revenge on Sri Krishna. What does that mean? All of his many marriages and love affairs were a divine sport with only one object - to elevate the woman through ecstatic love to divinity. 

If you can wrap your mind around this, you are good.

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.57 - 28 May 2023



॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

28 May 2023, Sunday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.57 -  Sri Krishna visits Hastinapura. Akrura is disgruntled and becomes an accessory to the murder of Satrajit and the theft of Syamantaka Mani. Sri Krishna establishes his possession of it and clears his own name again.

श्रीबादरायणिरुवाच
विज्ञातार्थोऽपि गोविन्दो दग्धानाकर्ण्य पाण्डवान् । कुन्तीं च कुल्यकरणे सहरामो ययौ कुरून् ॥ 
भीष्मं कृपं सविदुरं गान्धारीं द्रोणमेव च ।तुल्यदु:खौ च सङ्गम्य हा कष्टमिति होचतु: ॥
T: Sage Shuka, son of Badarayana Vyasa, narrated: "Despite knowing every happening everywhere and hence the unsuccessful effort of Kauravas to burn down the Pandavas and Kunti, Sri Krishna went with Balarama to make enquiries of their welfare to Hastinapura. There they met Bhsima, Kripa, Vidura, Gandhari and Drona, all lamenting the news that the Pandavas had perished in "an accidental fire" in their palace (which had indeed been built of incendiary material and set on fire by Duryodhana's men).  The brothers commiserated and said, "Alas!"

लब्ध्वैतदन्तरं राजन् शतधन्वानमूचतु: । अक्रूरकृतवर्माणौ मनि: कस्मान्न गृह्यते ॥
T: Meanwhile, something evil occurred in Dwaraka. During Sri Krishna's absence, Akrura, of all people, and Kritavarma both instigated Shatadhanva (another nobleman) to go and steal the Syamantaka Mani. Their grouse was that Satrajit had given his daughter Satyabhama in marriage to Sri Krishna instead of one of them as had been promised! Shatadhanva promptly went and murdered Satrajit and all his folk, and took the gem. 

A most aggrieved Satyabhama rushed to Hastinapura to inform Sri Krishna how her father had been killed by Shatadhanva for the Mani. Sri Krishna rushed back with Balarama and decided to track down Shatadhanva and get the Mani back. Meanwhile, Satyabhama had preserved her father's corpse in oil (to prevent decay) Shatadhanva dared not face Sri Krishna knowing he would be caught red-handed and punished. He approached Akrura for help (after Kritavarma refused citing how Sri Krishna's might was evident from the way he had destroyed Kamsa). Akrura too refused, saying Sri Krishna was divinity incarnate and no one could understand him or his Maya. Did he not lift Govardhana as a seven-year-old like a child lifts a mushroom? Finally, Akrura agreed to secretly keep the Mani. Now Shatadhanva left the gem with Akrura and scooted on a very swift horse. But he was chased with matching speed by Sri Krishna and Balarama in their chariot. When his horse fell dead from fatigue, Shatadhanva started running on foot. Sri Krishna launched his Chakra which promptly decapitated Shatadhanva. Unfortunately, the brothers did not find the gem on his person at all! Nonplussed, Balarama said he would proceed to Mithila to meet his friend and Sri Krishna should return to Dwaraka, hold the fort, and look for the gem there as it might have been secreted away by Shatadhanva with someone.

While Balarama spent a few years with his friend in Mithila, and Duryodhana also learnt Gada Yuddha from him during this time there, Sri Krishna at once returned to Dwaraka. He performed the obsequies for Satrajit. 

Kritavarma and Akrura learnt how Sri Krishna had killed Shatadhanva. Fearing for their lives, they fled Dwaraka with the gem.

Soon, Dwaraka had many bad happenings. People attributed it to Akrura's absence since he was known to be pious. They wanted Sri Krishna to bring him back. Shuka comments that the people of Dwaraka were stupid as they had the greatest divinity in their midst in the form of Sri Krishna! Sri Krishna quickly arranged for Akrura to be discovered and brought back. He went to Akrura and spoke softly and smilingly. "Akrura, how are you? Hope all is well? By the way, we have known all along that the Syamantaka Mani was given to you for safekeeping by Shatadhanva!"

"Satrajit had no sons. Hence his daughter's sons should inherit the gem. However, I shall let you keep it, provided you make public your possession of it by handing it over for display to the people." Sage Shuka says Sri Krishna tells Akrura that the way he is nowadays performing Yajnas on golden altars, anyone could have guessed he had the gem that produced gold daily.

स्यमन्तकं दर्शयित्वा ज्ञातिभ्यो रज आत्मन: ।विमृज्य मणिना भूयस्तस्मै प्रत्यर्पयत् प्रभु: ॥
T: Sri Krishna then displayed the gem for all his people to see, which convinced them he was not behind its disappearance again. Then he handed it back to Akrura, knowing that Akrura would not cause any more harm.

Sage Shuka concludes this chapter by saying that the mysterious ways of the Lord displayed in the story of Syamantaka Mani are to be recounted and heard with devotion as the narrative will confer protection against infamy.

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.56 - 27 May 2023


॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

27 May 2023, Saturday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.56 -  Sri Krishna clears his reputation by retrieving Syamantaka Mani, and weds Jambavati and Satyabhama.

श्रीशुक उवाच
सत्राजितः स्वतनयां कृष्णाय कृतकिल्बिषः । स्यमन्तकेन मणिना स्वयमुद्यम्य दत्तवान् ॥
T: Sage Shuka narrated: "Satrajit gave his daughter Satyabhama in marriage to Sri Krishna after regretting his false accusation of Sri Krishna as having stolen his sacred gem Syamantaka Mani."

This is a delectable short episode. Satrajit, a nobleman in Dwaraka, was a devout worshipper of Lord Surya. Surya gave him a divine gem, which dazzled as it shone on Satrajit's neck so brightly that people mistook him for the sun himself! The Mani (gem) also produced a daily harvest of gold wherever it lay. It also cured diseases and resolved people's grievances by its very presence.

Whereas the people of Dwaraka were enamoured of Syamantaka Mani and deeply envied Satrajit, Sri Krishna solemnly advised him that such a powerful gem rightfully should be submitted to King Ugrasena as it would be safe and its benefits would reach all citizens. Satrajit simply suspected Sri Krishna of mala fide intentions.

One day, Prasena, brother of Satrajit, went hunting, wearing the gem around his neck. He was attacked by a lion who killed him. The lion made away with the shining gem but was intercepted and killed by Jambavan, the Brahma-born bear hero of Ramayana who lived forever. Jambavan went to his cave in the forest and his son, a boy, was afterwards allowed to play with the gem!

Meanwhile, Satrajit rued the disappearance of his brother and also more importantly the loss of the gem. He openly accused Sri Krishna of having killed his brother in the forest and having stolen the gem. Such is the power of Vishnu Maya that this accusation gained currency in Dwaraka! Sri Krishna decided to clear his name. He went with a group of citizens to the forest, hunted down the remains of Prasena and his horse, and pointed out to them how it had all the markings of a lion's attack. 

The group then followed the blood trail and found the lion's carcass as well as foot marks that led them to Jambavan's deep and dark cave. Sri Krishna entered that forbidding cave alone and found a boy playing with the dazzling, divine gem! He told the boy that this gem had been stolen and he should give him the gem back. Meanwhile, the womenfolk or female bears raised a hue and cry and Jambavan arrived. He immediately attacked the intruder. There was a terrific battle that lasted twenty-eight days between Sri Krishna and Jambavan.

They fought with weapons, viz. rocks and trees, relentlessly and fiercely. It was a fight to the death almost. After many days, Jambavan started tiring and eventually, realised his blunder. 

यस्येषदुत्कलितरोषकटाक्षमोक्षै- र्वर्त्मादिशत्क्षुभितनक्रतिमिङ्गिलोऽब्धिः ।
सेतुः कृतः स्वयश उज्ज्वलिता च लङ्का रक्षः शिरांसि भुवि पेतुरिषुक्षतानि ॥
T: How could he not have recognised Bhagavan Narayana! The same Narayana had come and blessed him before as Sri Rama! The same hero had tamed the ocean, then built a bridge across the ocean, and killed the redoubtable Ravana and his ilk! Now, this must be the Sri Krishna incarnation! He fell at Sri Krishna's feet, begged forgiveness, and was told by Sri Krishna smilingly that Jambavan was cooped up in his cave and did not know the story of Syamantaka Mani and the false accusation Sri Krishna had to clear himself of. Jambavan not only gave Sri Krishna the Mani back with an apology, but he also made Sri Krishna wed his lovely daughter Jambavati. Jambavati was of course a human in form born as she was to an Apsara and the bear hero. 

The citizens waiting outside the cave left after twelve days giving up Sri Krishna for dead. There was much mourning in the city and even Vasudeva and Devaki grieved the fate of Sri Krishna. 

सत्राजितं शपन्तस्ते दु:खिता द्वारकौकस: ।
उपतस्थुश्चन्द्रभागां दुर्गां कृष्णोपलब्धये ॥

T: The whole town spoke disparagingly of the arrogant, greedy, and unjust Satrajit for having falsely accused Sri Krishna and now having caused his disappearance. They were plunged in distress and prayed ardently to Devi Chandrabhaga Durga to bring back Sri Krishna to them. 

Imagine the utter astonishment of the entire city of Dwaraka when Sri Krishna returned wearing the dazzling divine Syamantaka Mani and having on his arm a bride! The whole city erupted in joyous celebration and the chatter about Satrajit grew even louder when the whole story became public and Satrajit received the gem back from Sri Krishna.

एवं व्यवसितो बुद्ध्या सत्राजित्स्वसुतां शुभाम् । मणिं च स्वयमुद्यम्य कृष्णायोपजहार ह ॥
तां सत्यभामां भगवानुपयेमे यथाविधि । बहुभिर्याचितां शीलरूपौदार्यगुणान्विताम् ॥
भगवानाह न मणिं प्रतीच्छामो वयं नृप । तवास्तां देवभक्तस्य वयं च फलभागिनः ॥

T: Satrajit was very contrite. He realised he should have listened to Sri Krishna in the first place. He went to Sri Krishna, submitted the Syamantaka Mani at his feet, and also begged Sri Krishna to marry his divinely beautiful daughter Satyabhama. Sri Krishna smiled, and accepted her hand, but told Satrajit that the gem rightfully belonged to him and he should worship it enshrined in his home. He also told Satrajit that all the gold that the Mani produced daily should be submitted to the king, Ugrasena.

Sengol - The Chola Golden Sceptre


What makes India the MOST-HAPPENING place is not its 1.4++ billion people or the billion TV channels and parties crying hoarse on every topic from sea scum to sheeshmahal. It is the everyday phenomenon of newer and newer discoveries of older and greater symbols of our Dharmic civilisation that people in denial cannot accept. 

The Sengol is the latest example. While Nehru and family took away the Sengol handed over to him amidst chants by a priest on 15 August 1947, mistaking it for a gift of a golden walking stick... It actually symbolises the Royal Sceptre from Ramayana times. It was, along with the crown, the symbol of Dharmic authority vested in the ruler by the Guru who recognised his ability and adherence to Dharma along with democratic endorsement. This Sengol is designed with the Chola period motif of Nandi, the supreme symbol of strength and wisdom dedicated to Dharma (another word is Shiva!) 

So if Modi goes and brings back from the Allahabad bungalow of Nehru the so-called golden walking stick and anoints it in the new Hall of Parliament as the Sengol, it does not mean Modi owns it or beats anyone with it. It simply shows that India is becoming Dharmic by investing the authority to rule and serve in the elected representatives as long as the people and the Gurus have trust and confidence in them. Period. The Sengol belongs to everyone invested with authority to perform his or her duty to the nation.

26 May 2023, Friday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.55 -  The fascinating story of Pradyumna, son of Sri Krishna and Rukmini.

श्रीशुक उवाच
कामस्तु वासुदेवांशो दग्धः प्राग्रुद्रमन्युना । देहोपपत्तये भूयस्तमेव प्रत्यपद्यत ॥ 
स एव जातो वैदर्भ्यां कृष्णवीर्यसमुद्भवः । प्रद्युम्न इति विख्यातः सर्वतोऽनवमः पितुः ॥
T: Sage Shuka narrated: "Dear King! Do you remember the story when Manmatha, the God of Love, was reduced to ashes by Lord Shiva when he disturbed His meditation to invoke interest in Shiva for Parvati? At that time, Manmatha's wife Rati pleaded with Shiva that Manmatha should be brought back to life as he was only discharging his duty. Shiva promised that he will assume a body at the appropriate time until when he would be known as Ananga (body-less)."

"Well, Manmatha now took birth as the son of Sri Krishna in Rukmini's womb! Remember that Manmatha is the son of Bhagavan Narayana, so all this was in the fitness of things. He was a fitting match for Sri Krishna in all qualities."

तं शम्बरः कामरूपी हृत्वा तोकमनिर्दशम् । स विदित्वाऽऽत्मनः शत्रुं प्रास्योदन्वत्यगाद्गृहम् ॥ 
तं निर्जगार बलवान् मीनः सोऽप्यपरैः सह । वृतो जालेन महता गृहीतो मत्स्यजीविभिः ॥
T:The plot thickened immediately. Shambara, as Asura, knew that this child would be his nemesis. So what he did was simply steal the baby from his cradle and throw him into the ocean! As Fate willed, the baby was swallowed whole by a huge fish. This fish was soon caught by fishermen. They came and presented the prize catch to their king, Shambara! Shambara ordered that the fish be cooked well and served to him. (Shambara was either a Bong or a Mallu and both love fish and their coastline).

दृष्ट्वा तदुदरे बालं मायावत्यै न्यवेदयन् । नारदोऽकथयत्सर्वं तस्याः शङ्कितचेतसः ।
बालस्य तत्त्वमुत्पत्तिं मत्स्योदरनिवेशनम् ॥
सा च कामस्य वै पत्नी रतिर्नाम यशस्विनी । पत्युर्निर्दग्धदेहस्य देहोत्पत्तिं प्रतीक्षती ॥
निरूपिता शम्बरेण सा सूदौदनसाधने ।कामदेवं शिशुं बुद्ध्वा चक्रे स्नेहं तदार्भके ॥
T: The chefs discovered a splendid, royal-looking, baby alive and kicking inside the fish. They simply handed that baby to Mayavati, a maidservant in Shambara's court.  Now, the plot thickened further. Mayavati was Rati herself, the goddess born and waiting for Manmatha to return to her. This was told to her by the all-knowing and all-compassionate Narada. Mayavati brought up the kid showering both motherly and wifely love on the baby! 

 सा तं पतिं पद्मदलायतेक्षणं प्रलम्बबाहुं नरलोकसुन्दरम् ।
सव्रीडहासोत्तभितभ्रुवेक्षती प्रीत्योपतस्थे रतिरङ्ग सौरतैः ॥
T: Pradyumna grew up into a heart-breakingly handsome man. Rati could not hold in check her amorous feelings towards her husband being reborn. She was coquettish, loving, and full of amorous gestures and glances. This was not taken kindly to by Pradyumna, for she was the mother who had raised him! He protested vehemently. Rati then disclosed the sequence of events from Manmatha's annihilation by Shiva's opening of His third eye. and how as Rati she was waiting for the boon that Manmatha would be reborn and united with her. Pradyumna was Manmatha's incarnation as she was Mayavati Rati!


तमिमं जहि दुर्धर्षं दुर्जयं शत्रुमात्मनः । मायाशतविदं त्वं च मायाभिर्मोहनादिभिः ॥
परिशोचति ते माता कुररीव गतप्रजा । पुत्रस्नेहाकुला दीना विवत्सा गौरिवातुरा ॥ 
प्रभाष्यैवं ददौ विद्यां प्रद्युम्नाय महात्मने । मायावती महामायां सर्वमायाविनाशिनीम् ॥ 
T: Mayavati now disclosed how Queen Rukmini had not gotten over her grief of losing her first born baby from the cradle. Shambara Asura was the one who had abducted Pradyumna! So Mayavati told Pradyumna to attack and kill Shambara. She also taught him the Maha Maya tantra to take care of any Asuric weapons, magic tricks or stealth attacks. 

बाध्यमानोऽस्त्रवर्षेण रौक्मिणेयो महारथः । सत्त्वात्मिकां महाविद्यां सर्वमायोपमर्दिनीम् ॥ 
आकीर्यमाणो दिविजैः स्तुवद्भिः कुसुमोत्करैः । भार्ययाम्बरचारिण्या पुरं नीतो विहायसा ॥ 
T: Pradyumna now went and shouted to Shambara to come and fight. Shambara was a bit shocked but came with his big bow and shot arrows. Pradyumna countered them. The fight went on with an array of weapons. Soon, Shambara used his Asuric tricks of illusion and disappeared, attacking Pradyumna from the sky. Pradyumna invoked the Maha Maya tantra and got hold of Shambara and decapitated him. 

Amidst celebrations and felicitations from the gods and men showered on Pradyumna over his vanquishing Shambara, he now made his way quickly to Dwaraka along with his wife Mayavati. When they entered the city, there was utter confusion. Pradyumna looked a copy of Sri Krishna, except he was even more youthful and radiant in the company of Mayavati. All the womenfolk mused: "Who is this replica of our Sri Krishna!? Which woman was lucky to give birth to this hero!?" 

Just then. Queen Rukmini saw Pradyumna with his wife, Mayawati.

मम चाप्यात्मजो नष्टो नीतो यः सूतिकागृहात् । एतत्तुल्यवयोरूपो यदि जीवति कुत्रचित् ॥
कथं त्वनेन सम्प्राप्तं सारूप्यं शार्ङ्गधन्वनः । आकृत्यावयवैर्गत्या स्वरहासावलोकनैः ॥ 
एवं मीमांसमानायां वैदर्भ्यां देवकीसुतः । देवक्यानकदुन्दुभ्यामुत्तमश्लोक आगमत् ॥ 
T: "Who is this handsome man? Would he be my baby stolen from the cradle? Indeed, if my son is alive, he would perhaps look like this one. How come this man has so much resemblance to Bhagavan Sri Krishna with his famous Sharnga bow? In build, features, gestures and smiles and glances, he is so much like my lord!?" As Rukmini was feeling all this consternation, Bhagavan Sri Krishna himself arrived in Dwaraka, escorting his parents Devaki and Vasudeva.

विज्ञातार्थोऽपि भगवांस्तूष्णीमास जनार्दनः । नारदोऽकथयत्सर्वं शम्बराहरणादिकम् ॥
देवकी वसुदेवश्च कृष्णरामौ तथा स्त्रियः । दम्पती तौ परिष्वज्य रुक्मिणी च ययुर्मुदम् ॥
T: The mischievous Sri Krishna kept quiet although he knew everything. Just then, Sage Narada arrived by Vande Bharat Express. He narrated everything to a most delighted auidence - Sri Krishna, Rukmini, Balarama, Revati, Devaki and vasudeva. You can imagine their boundless joy! They all heartily embraced Pradyumna and Mayavati. 

यं वै मुहुः पितृसरूपनिजेशभावास्तन्मातरो यदभजन् रहरूढभावाः ।
चित्रं न तत्खलु रमास्पदबिम्बबिम्बे कामे स्मरेऽक्षविषये किमुतान्यनार्यः ॥ 
T: Sage Shuka concludes: "King Parikshit! The queens of Sri Krishna himself would be confused and emotionally stirred whenever Pradyumna came within their view. He was such a perfect replica of the world-bewitching beauty that Sri Krishna, his father, was. Then what do I need to tell you about all the other women of Dwaraka!"

Srimad Bhagavatam X b.54 - 25 May 2023


॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

25 May 2023, Thursday - Srimad Bhagavatam X b.54 -  Sri Krishna defeats the opposing kings who attack him from all around after seeing him kidnapping Rukmini. Sri Krishna spares Rukmi’s life but disfigures him. He brings Rukmini to Dwaraka to a great reception and marries her.

Seeing Sri Krishna taking Princess Rukmini away right under their noses, the antagonistic kings gathered their armies and pursued him. Balarama and the generals of the Yadava army turned to face these opponents, blocking their advance. The enemy armies then began pouring incessant showers of arrows upon Sri Krishna’s army. Seeing her husband-to-be’s forces under such a violent attack, Rukmini looked at Sri Krishna in fright. But Sri Krishna simply smiled and told her there was nothing to fear because his army would surely destroy the enemy in short order.
Balarama and the other heroes then began to annihilate the opposing army with fierce arrows. The enemy kings, headed by Jarasandha, retreated after suffering the destruction of their armies at the hands of the Yadavas.
Jarasandha could not help Shishupala but consoled him: “Happiness and distress are never permanent and are under the control of the Supreme Being. Seventeen times Sri Krishna defeated me, but in the end, I was victorious over him. Thus, seeing that victory and defeat are under the control of destiny and time, I have learned not to succumb to either lamentation or joy. The time now favours the Yadavas, so they have defeated you with only a small army, but in the future, Time will favour you, and you will surely conquer them.” Consoled in this way, Shishupala took his army and went away to his kingdom.

Rukmini’s brother Rukmi, who hated Sri Krishna, was infuriated after witnessing Sri Krishna’s kidnapping of his sister. So, after vowing before all the kings present that he would not return to Kundina (capital of Vidarbha) until Sri Krishna had been destroyed and Rukmini rescued, Rukmi set out with his army to attack the Lord. Ignorant of Sri Krishna’s glories, Rukmi boldly attacked Sri Krishna in a lone chariot. He approached the Lord, struck Him with arrows and demanded that he release Rukmini. Sri Krishna fended off Rukmī’s weapons, breaking them to pieces. Then He raised his sword high and was about to kill Rukmi when Rukmini interceded and fervently pleaded that her brother’s life be spared. 

Sri Krishna did not kill Rukmi, but with his sword he shaved off bits of Rukmi’s hair here and there, leaving him with a disfigured countenance. Just then Balarama appeared on the scene with the Yadava army. Seeing Rukmi disfigured, he thought Sri Krishna was about to kill him.

असाध्विदं त्वया कृष्ण कृतमस्मज्जुगुप्सितम् । 
वपनं श्मश्रुकेशानां वैरूप्यं सुहृदो वधः ॥ 
मैवास्मान् साध्व्यसूयेथा भ्रातुर्वैरूप्यचिन्तया ।
सुखदुःखदो न चान्योऽस्ति यतः स्वकृतभुक् पुमान् ॥
बन्धुर्वधार्हदोषोऽपि न बन्धोर्वधमर्हति ।
त्याज्यः स्वेनैव दोषेण हतः किं हन्यते पुनः ॥
क्षत्रियाणामयं धर्मः प्रजापतिविनिर्मितः ।
भ्रातापि भ्रातरं हन्याद्येन घोरतरस्ततः ॥
राज्यस्य भूमेर्वित्तस्य स्त्रियो मानस्य तेजसः ।
मानिनोऽन्यस्य वा हेतोः श्रीमदान्धाः क्षिपन्ति हि ॥

तवेयं विषमा बुद्धिः सर्वभूतेषु दुर्हृदाम् ।
यन्मन्यसे सदाभद्रं सुहृदां भद्रमज्ञवत् ॥

आत्ममोहो नृणामेष कल्पते देवमायया ।
सुहृद्दुर्हृदुदासीन इति देहात्ममानिनाम् ॥

एक एव परो ह्यात्मा सर्वेषामपि देहिनाम् ।
नानेव गृह्यते मूढैर्यथा ज्योतिर्यथा नभः ॥

देह आद्यन्तवानेष द्रव्यप्राणगुणात्मकः ।
आत्मन्यविद्यया कॢप्तः संसारयति देहिनम् ॥
T: Seeing Sri Krishna with his sword raised on a disfigured Rukmi, Balarama spoke:
“My dear Krishna, You have acted without propriety! This deed will bring shame on us, for to disfigure a close relative by shaving off his moustache and hair is as good as killing him.”

“Oh Princess Rukmini, you are a noble soul and hence, please do not be displeased with us out of anxiety for your brother’s disfigurement. No one but oneself is responsible for one’s joy and grief, for a man experiences the result of his own Karma. And Krishna, you know this well. A relative should not be killed even if his wrongdoing warrants capital punishment. Rather, he should be thrown out of the family. Since he has already been killed by his own sin, why kill him again?”

“The code of sacred duty for warriors established by Lord Brahma enjoins that one may have to kill even his own brother. That is indeed a most dreadful law. Blinded by conceit with their personal prosperity, proud men offend others for the sake of such things as kingdom, land, wealth, women, honour and power. Princess Rukmini, Your attitude of protecting Rukmi is unfair, for like an ignorant person you wish good to those who are inimical to all living beings and who have done evil to your true well-wishers.”

“The Supreme Lord’s Maya makes men forget their real selves, and thus, taking the body for the self, they consider others to be friends, enemies or neutral parties. Those who are bewildered perceive the Paramatma who resides in all embodied beings, as many persons, just as one may perceive the light in the sky, or the sky itself, as many rays and bright patches. This material body, which has a beginning and an end, is composed of the physical elements, the senses and the three Gunas. The body, imposed on the self by material ignorance, causes one to experience the cycle of birth and death."

Rukmini cheered up now.  Rukmi, meanwhile, was feeling totally frustrated, deprived as he was of all his strength and his will to fight. Since he had vowed not to return home without conquering Sri Krishna, Rukmi constructed a city on that very spot and took up residence there in a mood of undiminished anger.

Sri Krishna took Rukmini to his capital, Dwaraka, and married her. All the citizens celebrated the wedding in lavish style, telling one another repeatedly throughout the city their accounts of how the Lord had kidnapped Rukmini. Everyone in Dwaraka was delighted to see Sri Krishna united with Rukmini.
